Which noise-cancelling 'phones should I pick?

Sep 3, 2009

Question on Music & Play:

What are the factors to look out for when purchasing active noise-cancelling in ear headphones? I'm currently trying to decide between the Panasonic RP-HC30E and Sony MDR-NC22.

Audio quality is a highly individualized preference, and I recommend you audition these headphones with your own media player at the shops before forking out cash for them.

Unfortunately, I have not tried any of the headphones that you've mentioned, but you can keep the following factors in mind when looking for noise-cancelling headphones. These would be the battery life, fit, portability as well as connectivity options.

Some headphones are permanently attached to the noise-cancelling processing box, so it would be a good idea to look out for those that feature detachable cables.

Only ultimate ears for me. Great noise cancellation and awesome sound to boot.

I had actually compare quite a few types of headphones, in-ear type, on the ear headset, over the ear headset.

In ear type: comes in small easy to carry size, offer passive or active noise cancelling, the noise-cancelling electronics are in a separate corded unit.

On the ear headset: Its a headset only cover over the rim of your ears. mostly offer active noise cancelling, noise-cancelling electronics is either inside the headset if its big enough or in a separate corded unit. It better that the headset comes with a carrying case.

Over the ear type: Its a headset that offer full coverage on the ear and have the best noise isolating, offer the best noise cancelling, but its the most bulky and wearer's ears might feel warm after sometime. Noise-cancelling electronics are in the headset.

I personally had bought the Audio Technica ATH-ANC7, best value for money.

Audio Technica ATH-ANC7!!! Love it to bits. Always take it when i travel, especially on long-haul flights. The engine becomes a distant hum and u can really sleep more comfortably, enjoy your movies even more. Makes long haul flights that much shorter. And it's made in Japan!

Actually the ANC7 is not made in Japan, but rather engineered and designed in Japan.

Most of the production is in China under the strict AT-Japan quality assurance.
