Are there region-free Blu-ray players?

Jun 19, 2009

Question on Home Entertainment:

I recently bought a Pioneer DMP-BD30 Blu-ray player and was told that it plays region A and B discs by the seller.

However, when I bought region B blu-ray movies from the UK, it could not play them. I called the seller and he said the player plays A and C, not B.

I am confused and on your site, when I searched the specs, there are no regions mentioned here.

Can you please tell me which regions this it plays and whether one can make it region free?

I think you are referring to the Panasonic DMP-BD30, right? Anyway, we doubt any reputable manufacturer will circumvent the Blu-ray consortium guidelines and manufacture an all-region Blu-ray player. Your set was probably "hacked" by the seller with its warranty void due to the unauthorized modification. We would suggest you contact the person for clarification.

We do not indicate the players' region coding because this depends on the country where the unit is purchased. For example, if you bought the BD30 in countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong through the proper retail channel, it should be limited to Blu-ray code A. With the exception of the Momitsu BDP-899, all-region Blu-ray players are not commonly available at the moment.

I believe it is time the film makers get real. We live in a global world where it is possible to buy movies off the Internet. If DVD players can become region free, why not BluRay? If the BluRay disc are reasonably priced, it does not make sense to try to make copies.
I think it will only be a matter of time before BluRay becomes region free. I would be surprised if it is not possible today to make a player region free. It's a matter of knowing how to change the firmware setting.

some can be override by key in particular code. Some can download patch from somewhere on internet to get region free, of course not from the Brand.
