Does my laptop come with Microsoft Office?

Jun 18, 2009

Question on Notebooks:

I see that my PC has Microsoft Office installed but it was not mentioned during sales that the machine came with it. Can I use it without any upgrades or fees?

Unless the salesperson specifically said he was bundling Microsoft Office with your machine, chances are the installed MS Office in your laptop is only a 90-day trial version. After the three months is up, you will need to pay for a license to continue using the product.

Alternatively, you can explore a freeware option called OpenOffice. It comes with a writer, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing application and database program. Most of these components are fully compatible with Microsoft Office-formatted files. Best of all, it's free.

Hi Darius,

You mentioned in your reply that one can use the freeware option called 'OpenOffice' and most of these components are fully compatible with Microsoft Office-formatted files.

I have downloaded 'OpenOffice' into one of my computers and it works just fine stand alone. But when I saved the document and try to open it from another computer with Microsoft Office, it doesn't work as I can't even open the document. Same likewise.

Is this supposed to be the case? I look forward to your reply. Thank you.
