Will the Palm Pre come to Asia?

Jun 14, 2009

Question on Mobile Phones:

Will the Palm Pre be available in South East Asia? Or it is only available in the US?

At this point in time, we don't know for sure if the Palm Pre will be available in Southeast Asia though we'd love to see it here. The Pre is currently available on Sprint in the US and, in its current form that works on CDMA networks, we won't be able to use it here in Asia since most operators' networks here are based on GSM.

Will we see a GSM version of the Pre then? It's hard to say, though it'd be unthinkable for Palm not to have thought about it yet. A GSM-based Pre with a Vodafone SIM card was spotted at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this February and a recent leaked ROM image of the Pre's operating system, webOS, gives a glimmer of hope that the company could already be all ready for it.

Got a question of your own?

Well according to this entry in crave... asia.cnet.com...

"It's no secret that Palm has a GSM product planned for its new webOS. With this mentioned in the existing software, the company could even be all ready for it."

If you are interested in Palm Pre this website provides a rather detailed "everything" about Pre. mypre.com

and according to one of it's report,
"GSM Palm Pre in Eastern Europe September; Western Europe prior to that?"
So we could be looking at a palm Pre launch in Singapore by perhaps Jan ?

From what I understand is that the GSM Pre will be available in the 2nd half of the year. Judging from CDMA Pre launch that would be some time in December. Roumours are that Pre will arrive in Australia as early as August although whether that means it arrives on Asian shores by 2009 is debatable. My guess is that an unlocked pre will probably arrive in Asia most likely in Singapore & Hong Kong sometime in December or January but expect it to be around $ 1K-1.5K

Im holding out all new purchases of phones until the Pre arrives. From the reviews Ive seen and as a die hard palm fan, it looks to be a phone worthy of the name of palm.
