How can I convert my LDs to more current formats?

Nov 22, 2008

Question on Home Entertainment:

I am planning to buy a DVD or harddisk recorder to transfer my home videos and LDs. Will the file format recorded be MPEG-2 or MPEG-4? Also, can LD videos be recorded? I was told by a salesman that certain brands prevent transfer of LDs to DVDs.

MPEG-2 is the standard compression format for all digital video recorders. There're also a few selected models in the market which feature MPEG-4 for extended recording hours.

You should be able to transfer most LDs to DVDs. Copy protection is seldom implemented for LDs.
