Will installing a grid computing program on my PC damage my CPU?

Jun 22, 2008

Question on PC & Peripherals:

I've installed a grid computing program on my PC and I'm afraid this will fully utilize my CPU usage and damage my PC in the long term. Am I being overly worried?

Most CPUs are able to run for extended periods at loads of between 60 and 70 percent. However, there are other factors to consider.

The worst enemy of any PC component is, arguably, heat. If the machine does not have adequate cooling, or if any of the other components produce more than expected amounts of heat, the mean time between failure decreases. Moreover, with utility prices increasing, grid computing on your home PC may not be a good idea unless you have a lot of loose change handy for electricity and repairs.
