Are there tradeoffs to the 1080i output on the Samsung R8?

May 11, 2008

Question on Home Entertainment:

Without 1080p, the Samsung LA40R81BX only has support for 1080i resolution. Does it affect the sharpness and clarity of the picture quality, compared to 1080p TVs? When used with a DVD/Blu-ray player with 1080p output, does the TV display fine and sharp details well in HD resolution? For fast action scenes, do images become blur?

The Samsung R8 will have no problems reproducing sharp pictures. Having a 1080i output only puts it on a slight disadvantage in terms of deinterlacing and video frame rate support. The former means it will hardly benefit from high-performance video processor found in premium DVD/Blu-ray players, while the latter is a potential handicap in rendering silky-smooth motion for film-based materials.
