Should I wait for new handhelds or buy one now?

May 5, 2008

Question on Handhelds:

I own a Qtek 9100 (HTC) which I am satisfied with. But I am looking to upgrade to a new handheld. How long should I wait? Should I buy one now or wait for new models in Q3 or Q4? What do you suggest?

That question always comes up when buying consumer electronics--should I buy, or should I wait. The short answer to your dilemma is this: There is no good time to buy. What I mean is that there will always be new and better products announced, so if you need something and know what you want, just go ahead and buy it now. There will almost always be buyers' regret when you see something newer (and possibly better and cheaper) announced after that, but as long as you are happy with your purchase, you really shouldn't think too much about it.

Now, more specifically for handheld devices, you don't have to worry about missing some new and revolutionary technology in the near future. If you buy something now and it has HSDPA and GPS, chances are, it won't become obsolete any time soon. I would suggest looking out for something will get upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.1. You can check which products are eligible in our upgrade calendar. If you decide to wait though, the first products to come with WM6.1 onboard should hit stores in June.
