I need help upgrading my PDA-phone

May 1, 2008

Question on Handhelds:

I'm a satisfied owner of the i-mate K-JAM. It's a couple of years old now, so I'm thinking of an upgrade. I'd like full GPS capability, quadband GSM, the latest 3G speeds as well as good QWERTY keypad. I SMS a lot during trips. I'm based in Australia, but travel a lot in the region.

The i-mate 8502 as well as the latest from HTC's Touch series look appealing, although I am not sure if I can do without the QWERTY keypad on the Touch series?

I'd also like Windows Mobile 6 or an equivalent operating system. I'm prepared to pay or wait for the right device. Any advice?

The i-mate K-JAM was made by HTC, and was succeeded by the Dopod 838 Pro and then later the HTC TyTN II. If you are fine with the form factor and functionality of the K-JAM, I think the TyTN II will be a good fit for your needs.

I can't comment on the performance of the i-mate 8502 as I've yet to do a full review on that model. As for the Touch Cruise (the only one in the Touch series with GPS), it works as well as a TyTN II in every aspect. But since you are comfortable with having a QWERTY keyboard, I'd say go with the TyTN II.

I do need to inform you that there are some unhappy TyTN II users because of certain video performance issues. This isn't so much a fault of the hardware, but that certain elements of the TyTN II's processor have not been activated due to licensing issues. It does not affect the basic usage of the PDA-phone but may annoy if you are particular about video performance and frame rates.
