Can I use a Webcam on any notebook?

Feb 8, 2008

Question on PC & Peripherals:

Do you happen to know if I can use a Webcam on any notebook, and if so, which one I could use on my Dell Inspiron 1501 which has an AMD Turion 64?

It doesn't matter what processor your PC uses. If you are running on Windows, most Webcams will be supported. Just check the outside label for confirmation.

On the other hand, if you have switched to Linux or other OSes, then things get a little tricky. Most Webcams do not have drivers written for Linux, so you may have to search online for third-party generic drivers (though some flavors like Ubuntu have such generic drivers built-in). In this case, we suggest bringing the laptop to the store and test the Webcam before buying.
