Samsung VPD361i: Plug & play?

Jul 19, 2006

Question on Videocams:

Have just bought a miniDV cam for the purpose of digitizing footage shot on high-end rental cams (what I use for jobs). Grabbed the cheapest one on the shelf since it'll never leave my studio and is purely for FireWire input purposes.

Looked at pre-owned ones and they're seldom much under US$250 plus they come with all sorts of potential gremlins and no warranty. Mine cost US$350 new, so I've been clever! Or so I thought...

Nothing I do will get my computer to see the device. Alarmingly, the manual has a list of rather archaic steps it suggests in order to upload miniDV, whereas FireWire supposedly just allows you to remote pilot your miniDVcam from your editing software's capture device. But even when I do exactly what the manual says, no dice! I've switched off the computer, tried the cam on DC power and battery power. Nothing makes the thing visible to my PC (a brand new, very powerful unit, not a 1991 IBM).

Who knows what to do here? All suggestions welcomed.

Based on the product specs on the VP-361i, it supports IEEE1394 input/output. You shouldn't be facing any problems.

I am sure you have installed the Samsung capturing software on your computer before you tried connecting your camcorder to it? Is there a new update to the software? Sometimes software updates can help solve technical issues inherent with earlier versions.

Though your desktop is no 1991 IBM workhorse, your desktop can still be a source of your problems such as a faulty IEEE1394 port, for instance.

In order to save time, since videography is your bread and butter, your best bet would be to call up Samsung technical support. Good luck.
