Creative speakers: Speak up, we can't hear yer

Edvarcl Heng  |  Nov 22, 2006

From the looks of it, lots of people are making speaker docks for the iPod and precious few are devoting design resources to Creative's Zen players. So the Singapore-based manufacturer has decided to go full hog with a range of decidedly delicious speakers. With a full set of designer chomps, these look good enough to munch the iPod Hi-Fi for tea.

There's lots of technical oomph on these speakers as well. The Z600 packs in the X-Fi sound system while the Z500 has a telescopic FM antenna to take advantage of the Zen Vision:M's radio capabilities. S$599 (US$440.44) for the Z600, S$299 (US$219.85) for the Z500 and S$199 (US$146.32) for the TravelSound ZEN V.

Cowon iAudio D2: Mini, tiny and cute

Edvarcl Heng  |  Nov 22, 2006

Just in time for Christmas. Touch screens may not be new, but it sure beats having a player festooned with buttons. Too much real estate wasted on controls will lead to a smaller screen. After all, PVPs can be complicated creatures and we all just want to lead a simple life with as big a screen as possible. A 2.5-incher is not a bad a deal.

Victorinox s.beat MP3 Digital Audio Player

Juniper Foo  |  Nov 22, 2006

Just when we thought we'd seen it all with the USB thumbdrive-in-a Swiss Army Knife, Victorinox has again surprised us. Taking off from its first digital foray, the company has now added an MP3 player with remote to its arsenal of tools. The s.beat, just out, comes in 1GB and 2GB flavors, with a 4GB version in the works. There's support for MP3, WMA and--yet more surprises--OGG Vorbis, a voice recorder and FM radio with six presets. Amazingly, the entire package is only slightly larger, in a handy 74 x 22 x 24mm size. Of course, this being a Swiss Army Knife (duh), you also get a blade, a pair of scissors and a nail file/screwdriver. But just in case you plan to take your player onboard, the Swiss have thought up a flight version, too, sans tools. All that's needed is to remove the player from the knife body in one step and, voila. Comes with a protective cover for the USB connection. And we know just the song to play on this multi-tool device. Hit it, Rockwell. Oh oh oh oh oh... knife, cuts like a knife...

Apple iPhone launch? You bet

Reuben Lee  |  Nov 21, 2006

The hype surrounding the anticipation of the Apple iPhone has reached new heights, with sports betting site Bodog.com taking bets on the launch date of the elusive cellular handheld.

According to a blog posted on our sister site CNET.com, Bodog will be "using the money line system to gauge whether Apple will introduce the iPhone by the end of April 2007, or whether it will introduce the product at January's MacWorld conference".

Based on the odds given by Bodog, those betting on whether Steve Jobs will announce the iPhone at January's MacWorld will need to wager US$280 to win US$100, while those who think the cellular device will be launched by April 30, 2007, will have to bid US$150 to make US$100. A launch after that date or no launch will score US$110 on a US$100 bet.

Face detection spills over to notebooks

Damian Koh  |  Nov 21, 2006

We've seen Fujifilm and Canon belting out their face detection-enabled digicams for a while. Now even Lenovo, the PC manufacturer, wants a piece of that pie.

Not quite the same snazzy face detection we see the cameras which automatically detects and focuses on faces, Lenovo's face recognition software--Veriface--on the Y300 notebook is intended to provide an additional layer of security when users log onto their laptops.

The onboard 1.3-megapixel Webcam measures the distance between the eyes and the nose, as well as several high points of your facial features. If it matches the digital map of your face stored on the computer, then voila, you've just logged onto your computer--James Bond style.

Now we all know Bond has a lot of enemies, so it pays to know which terrorist has been trying to impersonate him in order to gain access to his files. If terror hasn't succeeded already, Veriface keeps a log of unauthorized personnel who have tried to login.

If only camera manufacturers would include such a feature on their shooters, then denial is no longer possible for those who have been using our cameras without our permission.
