O2 Xda Atom spotted at SITEX

Reuben Lee  |  Nov 25, 2005

The much-anticipated O2 Xda Atom was spotted at O2's SITEX booth. The PDA-phone is available just for demo, however, and is expected to start shipping only in early December. However, those interested can make reservations through pre-sales orders at the booth.

The SITEX '05 fair was surprisingly not as crowded as we'd expect, though the location and Thursday being a work day were likely reasons for the less-than-usual crowd showing. For those looking for a new PDA, there were several good deals offered at the show, among them the HP iPaq hw6515, Palm LifeDrive and recently launched Dopod 900. Most can be found bundled with freebies ranging from Bluetooth headsets to GPS kits, to wireless keyboards.

Handset deals at the SITEX show

Reuben Lee  |  Nov 25, 2005

There's more to SITEX than just digital cameras, printers and laptops. While scouring the grounds at SITEX for good PDA deals, we came across several new phones including the recently launched BenQ M315 and Siemens CX75. Also, do check out the exclusive deals offered by StarHub on the Nokia 6230i and Siemens M75.

A money-losing Xbox 360?

Philip Wong  |  Nov 25, 2005

The stakes are high for the gaming console business between competing Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo with the former making a big splash into the market with its money-losing Xbox 360.

History has repeated itself with Microsoft back in the act of offering below margin pricing in a bid to outwit its competitors. This time round, Bill Gates is writing off around US$153.27 for each Xbox 360 sold in the US with its US$399 launch price.

Adding to the company woes were reports of system failure streaming in from early adopters. This ranged from error messages to outright breakdown with screens going blank. Nonetheless, these glitches are hardly making a dent in an otherwise, overwhelmingly successful product launch.

Q: A man walks into a bar and knock himself out... why?

Edvarcl Heng  |  Nov 25, 2005

I may be wrong, but from the accounts of some Macintosh devotees, if there're two vital destinations that an Apple cultist has to pay homage at, it would be the Apple shop in SoHo, New York, and MacWorld. But that takes oodles of greenbacks, and after footing the bill for a 30-inch cinematic Apple monitor, there's probably only just enough left to top up the ez-link card.

Apple connoisseurs on a shoestring budget can rest easy, however, since a new Apple center has opened at the Cineleisure complex in Singapore. The Club 21 ishop. Local fashion powerhouse + coolest tech brand on the planet. Geddit? Its free entry and it does not have a discriminatory policy against PC users. But expect plenty of fruity evangelists, gorgeous Apple ware (Bottega Veneta) and dedicated after-sales support. Hell, there's even a coffee bar. Now you can have your Apple and drink it too.

Pimping your notebook

Darius Chang  |  Nov 25, 2005

Sony's FJ series bucked the trend with its rainbow range of colors. Now, Hollywood stars try their hand at funking up their VAIO notebooks with their very own personal design. Are A-listers like Jessica Alba and Elijah Woods considering a switch from the hectic world of acting? Should we be ready for another reality TV a.k.a. Project Runway?

Apparently, these mobiles are not just for show. Currently displayed in different US states, they--the notebooks, not the stars--will be "pimping" for bids on eBay from January 9 next year for 15 days. Fans of Alba, Wood, Wilmer Valderrama and cool couple DJ AM and Nicole Richie will be glad to know that by inflating the prices of these laptops, they are doing their bit for charity as the proceeds will go to America's Second Harvest--the Nation's Food Bank Network for raising funds to eliminate hunger in the US.

We applaud the social consciousness of the celebrities while wondering, in a nation where 34 percent of the population is overweight, if hunger is still a major social issue there. Perhaps a "Lose weight by donating your food" campaign would be more appropriate by killing two birds with one fat stone?
