After much anticipation for the latest Mac OS X to date, some users who tried to upgrade their Apple machines are experiencing an unpleasant flashback of Windows BSOD (blue screen of death).Our colleague over at News.com reported that some Leopard installations freeze at the initial screen (whose background happens to be blue). Though Computerworld speculated that the troublemaker was Unsanity's APE software, a thread in Apple Support Forum seems to indicate that those who never even touched the aforementioned application is also experiencing installation problems.
The best solution offered by Apple so far is to use the Archive and Install feature to get rid of the offending software, though more advanced users can use the command-line interface as well.
We have contacted Apple Asia regarding this installation issue but they do not have a comment at this point in time. They did, however, suggest that users experiencing the issue should click on this link for technical support.
SanDisk 8GB monster heightens speed

How fast your camera shoots often depends on the memory card it uses. Even the cleverest camera mechanical artistry is not enough if it is hampered by a sluggish write speed.
Pro photographers would certainly appreciate the 8GB Extreme III SDHC since it's a drugged-up storage card for faster transfer speeds. Though the emphasis is on speed (it reads and writes at 20MB/s), there are some hardware and software extras.
The bundled MicroMate is a USB 2.0 reader that can turn the card into a mass storage device or a card reader while the included RescuePRO software is a data recovery tool to retrieve accidental deletions.
The 8GB SanDisk Extreme III SDHC will be available for retail in the US and Europe at US$179.99. No word on Asia at press time.

We may get a wide variety of mobile phones fast in Asia, but when it comes to BlackBerry handhelds, users in our region always have to wait a while for the US and Europe to get their "CrackBerry" fix first. Anyway, Research In Motion (RIM) today announced the availability of the BlackBerry Curve 8310 and 8320 devices in Singapore.
The Curve series of push-email handhelds, starting with the 8300 model, are meant to be more consumer-friendly but still feature a full QWERTY keypad unlike the other mass-market model, the BlackBerry Pearl. Features like a built-in camera and a 3.5mm audio jack for plugging in wired headsets set the Curve series apart from the regular BlackBerry devices meant for business users.
The 8310 comes with built-in GPS while the 8320 offers built-in Wi-Fi. And no, you can't have both options together as that's not available on any Curve device. Because of the consumer slant, these new BlackBerrys are less stoic looking and come in colors like silver and gold rather than just basic black.
Both devices will be available from the three operators in Singapore within the next two months though StarHub customers will only be getting the 8320 and not the 8310. We are still awaiting information about pricing and its wider Asian availability from RIM.
More updates on Samsung's HD players

If you haven't heard, Samsung has axed the BD-P2400 and is delaying the worldwide launch for its dual-format BD-UP5000. The good news for HD wannabes in Asia, however, is the BD-P1400 which is slated for release in Q4 2007. Though we were warned that these launch dates are tentative, the Korean company has lined up the BD-P1400 and BD-UP5000 for November and December, respectively. There are currently no pricing details, but you can expect an emerging price war with another upcoming universal HD player that we have on our radar.
What's cool about Samsung's new HD entries are their unique capabilities. The third-generation BD-P1400 will join the Pioneer BDP-LX70A as one of the rare Blu-ray players to support Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD audio bitstream outputs. The highly anticipated BD-UP5000 does one better by delivering a player that supports both HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs. It's also outfitted with a videophile-grade HDV processor which pretty much guarantees better quality DVD video upscaling. Both sets are loaded with Ethernet ports which make them potential players for interactive content (HDi and BD-J) downloading.
Do note that the actual shipping units of the new Samsung players may be differ slightly as some of the features mentioned above are based on preliminary specifications we received at the IFA tradeshow earlier this year.
