Vertu tries a new angle or two

Mike Yamamoto  |  Jul 15, 2008
It turns out that designer Christopher Tak Cheung Yue may have been onto to something after all with the seven-sided Suave phone he proposed for luxury handset maker Vertu. The angular creation looked pretty weird, even for a concept, but Vertu's latest offering actually seems to take some small steps in that direction.

While not nearly as drastic, the new Ascent Ti line does feature some unusual contours and textured surfaces to improve the grip, according to Sybarites--a key reason for Yue's geometric design as well. Because it's Vertu, of course, the Knurled and Checked models had to include the usual complement of aesthetic touches, respectively including metallic-gray and deep purple leather. Best of all, neither is being attacked by a snake.

Phase One announces 60.5-megapixel digital back

Leonard Goh  |  Jul 15, 2008
Moore's law seems to have accelerated over the past week--Kodak's recent 50-megapixel sensor is now outdated after digital back manufacturer Phase One announced its mind-staggering 60.5-megapixel P65+.

It has a full-frame medium-format sensor that measures 53.9 x 40.4mm, which towers over the typical point-and-shoot's chip which is about 10 times smaller. The 1.3GB RAM buffer can probably handle eight 180MB shots before it runs dry. A premium device has to be fitted to a premium body, which is a good variety of studio cameras from Linhof or Sinar that most of us can only dream of.

Although the megapixel fray for point-and-shoots is fading slowly, it has just begun for professional cameras. Unless you're a working photographer whose clients require bill-board-size prints, we're not really sure which media will let you display 60.5 megapixels' worth of details in their full glory.

The P65+ costs US$39,900, which is the price of a car. If I strike the lottery, I think I'll go for the latter.

Turn your iPhone into a voice note recorder with Jott

Dong Ngo  |  Jul 15, 2008
Jott is a very simple idea made sophisticated, and it works.

As a free download software for the iPhone, this application allows you to record voice notes, just like any sound recorder. However, the software goes one step further with the ability to transcribe recorded notes into text. You can even have the note sent to your mail account.

In order to use Jott, you will need to register for an account. Other than that, the application is completely free. Everything you do with the Jott application on the iPhone will be backed up to the account on the Web. For existing customers, their messages on the Jott account will be automatically made available to their iPhone via the application.

Personally I think this is a very neat idea. It would be a lot neater, though, if Jott could also work as voice command software, which is one of the functions sorely missed in the new iPhone 3G.

Dell Latitude XT Tablet gets multitouch feature

Darius Chang  |  Jul 15, 2008

It's all about the fingers, baby. Forget those lame multitouch trackpads on MacBooks and Eee PCs. Dell is bringing this feature to the big time (and the big screen) by incorporating touch features directly on the Latitude XT main display.

Zooming, scrolling and even tilting will all be possible once the Texan company releases the firmware upgrade (which is rumored to be tomorrow). There is even a cool power-saving mode--just double-tap with two fingers on the screen and the LCD will go blank. To whet your appetite, Dell has released a short clip on YouTube to demo how this new function will work. View it below.
