Popsicle-shaped external HDD stores your sweet memories

Jennifer Bergen  |  Jul 24, 2009

This delicious, frozen treat might be just what you’re looking for on a smoldering summer’s day--but, you can’t eat it, and you’ll have to wait to get your hands on it, too. Mint Hard, made by Korean design firm mintpass, is still a concept item, and an extremely clever one at that.

The name Mint Hard has two origins. First, the Korean word for ice cream bar is "Hard", and second--and more obvious--the "hard" in harddrive. The design of the Mint Hard is genius. The bar’s handle is a USB flash drive, and the ice cream part is a hard drive. So, you can simply throw a couple files on to the handle, and then when you have time later, plug the handle into the bar. The files are automatically transferred.

The Mint Hard comes in different flavors, which represent different storage sizes. Check out the mintpass Web site for more information and to see other mintpass innovations.

Toshiba's 19-inch LCD/DVD combo in stainless steel

Matthew Moskovciak  |  Jul 24, 2009

Buying an HDTV these days is almost like buying a Ford in the early 1900s; you can get any color you want, as long as it's glossy black. That might not exactly work in your modern kitchen decor; at least that's the thinking behind Toshiba's recently announced 19LV612U, which comes out in September.

The 19-inch LCD features a stainless-steel finish on its front panel; turn it to the side and there's a slot-loading DVD player built-in. The display has 1,366 x 768 native resolution and its basic connectivity (one HDMI input, one component video input, PC input and one standard AV input) should be enough to cover most kitchen setups, although many competing models have two HDMI inputs.

The hardest sell for Toshiba will be the 19LV612U's US$350 list price, as it's easy to find competing 19-inch LCD/DVD combos for about US$100 less.

Wireless-N to be finalized in September

Dong Ngo  |  Jul 24, 2009
Matthew Gast, a voting member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), suggested in his recent blog that the current Wireless-N (or 802.11n Draft) specification is going to be finalized in September.

The logo you should look for when buying wireless networking products.

If this is true, that would mean the specification took about seven years to become finalized from the day it was conceived.

So what does it mean for consumers? Apparently not much, according to the Wi-Fi Alliance, the group that tests and certifies wireless networking products to ensure their interoperability.

The group announced Thursday that it will not change the baseline requirements of its 802.11n certification program, and plans to make only small optional additions to address the finalization of the 802.11n standard. The updated test program will preserve interoperability with more than 600 Wi-Fi-certified 802.11n draft 2.0 products released since June 2007, while adding testing for some optional features now included in the final standard.

JBL Duet III complements the iMac nicely

David Carnoy  |  Jul 23, 2009

(Credit: JBL)

CNET reviewed the JBL Duet II PC speakers earlier this year and had some good things to say about them, though we did think they were a little short on bass. Now we got our hands on the step-up model, the Duet III, which offers the same design but the speakers are blown up in size by about 25 percent.

The package includes zeppelin-shaped speakers measuring 116 x 116 x 304mm (the Duet IIs are 266mm tall). Their fronts have a metallic silver mesh (read: Cloth) covering the speaker grilles, while their backs have a glossy black finish. They're attractive, modern-looking, and go particularly well with iMac models that feature an aluminum finish.

Note: The price of the JBL Duet III speakers for Asia is not known yet and it will be arriving in Singapore in October this year. We'll keep you updated.

Wi-Fi routers get sexed up

Rich Trenholm  |  Jul 23, 2009

Few things are less sexy than the humble router. But this wireless workhorse is our portal to the wonders of the Internet, and it's overdue for a makeover. Art students, backed by TalkTalk, have come up with four clever and cool concepts to bring sexy back to Wi-Fi gizmos.
