Windows 7 activation hacked

Dong Ngo  |  Jul 30, 2009

Microsoft only just released final code for Windows 7 to manufacturers and the company is already facing a security risk.

The Windows Genuine Advantage antipiracy system in the Windows 7 Ultimate release to manufacturers (RTM) has reportedly been compromised by some Chinese hackers, according to a variety of Chinese forums, and first reported by Neowin.com.This means the user can fully activate the software offline without connecting to Microsoft's activation server.

Apple to attend CES 2010? Read on

Michelle Meyers  |  Jul 30, 2009

CES is devoting more floorspace to Apple this year. But will Apple attend? The Wall Street Journal is saying it will. (Credit: Tom Krazit/CNET)

We've heard lots of speculation about the possibility of Apple attending the massive CES tradeshow in January, but The Wall Street Journal is reporting straight out that Apple plans to attend.

If true, this would seem a bit of a schizophrenic move. After all, Apple explained its decision to leave Macworld (which takes place around the same time as CES) by saying that it doesn't need tradeshows anymore to get its message across, given its network of retail stores.

We've attempted to reach Apple for confirmation, even given the late hour, but haven't yet received a response.

Luke Skywalker is really a USB drive

Matt Hickey  |  Jul 29, 2009

(Credit: TechEBlog)

USB drives have become a commodity, and, like other things we have too many of, it's hard to make individuals stand out. That's why I find this Luke Skywalker-getting-maimed USB drive to be doubly awesome: It's my favorite climactic scene from the original trilogy and a bad-ass USB drive to boot (not meaning it's bootable, just meaning...well, you know).

Sure, it may be cumbersome to have to sever the son of Anakin's hand to access your work documents for serious business, but it will always remind you of the sacrifice the young Jedi had to endure.

As a side note, I'd like to say to any girls who think this is awesome that I live in Seattle and am available most nights after 7:00 p.m.

D-Link unveils its pilot network media streamer

Philip Wong  |  Jul 29, 2009

The D-Link DSM-350 is a handsome network media streamer dressed in brushed-metal and piano black finish. It utilizes a 2.5-inch notebook hard drive and is notably smaller than its rivals in the market at just 263 x 169 x 38mm. Out-of-the-box, the DSM-350 supports most of the popular audio, video and image formats and can also play off USB devices and networked PCs. These range from regular MP3s to MKVs for playing back ripped Blu-rays via its HDMI port. It also shines with the BitTorrent downloading function and can be managed easily through the Internet.

HP's SimpleSave for dummies

Dong Ngo  |  Jul 28, 2009

Backing up a computer can be tricky for many people, especially those who access data via the software applications without knowing where the actual data files or folders reside on the hard drive. I have some friends who used to believe that you could back up all your office documents just by dragging and dropping the icons of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook over to an external hard drive.

This is where products such as the SimpleSave external hard drive series, like the SimpleSave Portable that Hewlett-Packard, comes into play. The other drive in the series, the SimpleSave desktop, will be available in September
