Acer's sleek 23-inch monitor

Eric Franklin  |  Jun 29, 2009

Although the very sleek-looking H235H will not manipulate time and space, it at least looks like it could.

For the most part, I'm really loving this era of 16:9 LCD computer monitors. The fact that we can get a 21.5- or 23-inch monitor with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080, can't be a bad thing since previously monitors of those sizes would have topped out at 1,680 x 1,050 in 16:10. While I have a little something to say about 20-inchers with 16:9, for the most part I'm happy.

In anticipation of the October 22 launch of the Windows 7 operating system, Microsoft has announced today an upgrade program for those who are planning to purchase new computers.

According to the software company, "from June 26, 2009, anyone who buys a PC from a participating manufacturer or retailer, with Windows Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate, will receive an upgrade to Windows 7 at little or no cost". The offer may, however, vary for each manufacturer or retailer as some may charge a fee for shipping and handling.

The program will last till January 31, 2010, with software redemptions offered until the end of February 2010.

Asus offers Windows 7 upgrade path to new customers

Darius Chang  |  Jun 26, 2009
You can almost smell Windows 7 in the air as we get closer to the October 22 launch date. If you have been holding off buying a PC till after the release of the new operating system, you may not have to wait much longer. Asus is one of the first vendors to announce their Windows 7 upgrade program for those who have purchased eligible laptops and Nettops during the qualifying period.

This program also includes the Eee PC ET2203 Nettop as well. Those who have purchased their machines between June 26 2009 and January 31 2010 can log on to http://event.asus.com/2009/windows7 to register for the software upgrade kit. Though the kit is free, you will still have to fork out for shipping and handling charges. However, this doesn't mean that you can get your hands on Windows 7 earlier than the rest of the public, as you'll still have to wait for the official launch on October 22 before these installation discs will be sent out. The specific upgrade path for each version of Vista to 7 is given below.

US asks China to drop "mandatory" special filtering software for PCs

Erica Ogg  |  Jun 25, 2009

The US Trade Representative has written a letter to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce asking that the country drop its requirement that all new PCs sold in China have special filtering software installed.

The letter was sent Tuesday by Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, and expressed concern that the Green Dam-Youth Escort software required to be in all new PCs by July 1 violates World Trade Organization rules.

The Green Dam software is intended to keep children from accessing pornography online, according to the Chinese Government, but the US, along with some technology companies perceive the requirement as further attempts at censorship as well as a trade barrier.

"China is putting companies in an untenable position by requiring them, with virtually no public notice, to preinstall software that appears to have broad-based censorship implications and network security issues," Locke said in a statement.

Mac users have had many options for external storage lately. Two weeks ago, Western Digital unveiled its new My Book Studio II for Mac, and Seagate just now released a few of its own.

The company announced Wednesday a new lineup of portable and desktop FreeAgent external hard drives designed specifically for Macs. This includes two portable external hard drives, a regular-size external hard drive, and a docking station.

The portable drives includes the FreeAgent Go for Mac and FreeAgent Go Pro for Mac, similar to the Windows versions released awhile ago. These two drives share the same capacities of up to 500GB, but the Pro version comes with FireWire connections and a faster 7200rpm internal hard drive, while the nonpro version comes with USB 2.0 and a 5400rpm internal hard drive. The 500GB versions of the FreeAgent Go and FreeAgent Go Pro cost US$150 and US$190, respectively.
