Vista SP2 released: What you need to know

Nate Lanxon  |  May 27, 2009

Your Vista machine is about to get a big fat update from Microsoft, so we thought you should probably know something about it.

It's the second service pack for Windows Vista, and contains all updates released since SP1 was released early last year. Most notably, SP2 adds Blu-ray disc-burning right into Windows Explorer, meaning files and folders can be dragged and dropped to Blu-ray discs just like DVDs and CDs can now.

Viewsonic launches Nettop all-in-one

Darius Chang  |  May 26, 2009

Hot on the heels of the Lenovo IdeaCentre C300 comes Viewsonic's first Atom-based All-in-One which will be retailing next month in Asia for S$899 (US$638.68).

Better known for manufacturing flat-screen monitors, the Taiwan maker's All-in-One, the VPC100, looks no larger or thicker than a standard LCD display. But behind the 19-inch 16:9 aspect ratio screen is an Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor with 1GB RAM, 160GB harddisk and integrated DVD writer. Other features include a 1.3-megapixel Webcam, 802.11b/g and Gigabit Ethernet port. But unlike the IdeaCentre C300, this model does not come with a discrete graphics processor. So expect the same video and computing performance as a normal Netbook.

Lenovo launches entry-level C300 All-in-One

Darius Chang  |  May 25, 2009

The title says it all. The previously launched Lenovo IdeaCentre A600 all-in-one was an impressive feat of engineering, combining a powerful Core 2 Duo laptop platform with motion-sensing remote control and strong entertainment features. The Lenovo C300 targets those with more basic needs and sports the Atom Netbook platform to offer a relatively affordable all-in-one desktop experience.

500GB in a MacBook: Seagate Momentus hard drive tested

Nate Lanxon  |  May 25, 2009

Apple won't sell you a 500GB harddisk for your Mac yet, but Seagate will. We've been testing Seagate's 2.5-inch Momentus 5400.6 500GB ST9500325AS SATA harddisk, which works a treat in the new unibody MacBooks, and is compatible with PlayStation 3 consoles.

500GB is a whole hell of a lot of storage, and 180GB more than the maximum drive capacity of 320GB that Apple sells. And, this much larger drive will cost you only about S$145 (US$103.01).

Once installed and formatted, you'll get about 460GB of usable space. It's a quiet little 5,400rpm disk like the ones that come with new MacBooks, giving maximum read speeds inside our Mac of 67.04MB/s and write speeds of 66.91MB/s. We tested with a 2008 Unibody MacBook with 2GB of RAM and a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, using Xbench.

CES to expand Apple section

Erica Ogg  |  May 22, 2009
The Consumer Electronics Association, which hosts CES in Las Vegas every year, said Thursday that the tradeshow will expand its Apple section from 4,000 square feet to 25,000 square feet.

It's called the iLounge Pavilion and will be an exhibition area for products related to the Mac, iPod, and iPhone. This year, for the first time, there will also be a section for applications for use on Apple products.

The original 4,000-square-foot space sold out within days of the announced availability to retailers, developers, and accessory makers looking to exhibit their wares and services, according to the CEA. That led to the decision to expand the floor space.

After Apple announced that the 2009 MacWorld Expo in January would be its last participation in the event, speculation arose that the company might choose to appear at CES--which is held around the same time--instead.
