LCD monitors that watch you

Eizo Nanao has announced the inclusion of an "EcoView Sense" feature into its just announced FlexScan monitors, the 20-inch EV2023W and the 23-inch EV2303W.
The EcoView feature allows the monitors--using motion detectors--to detect if a person is sitting in front of it.
If it senses when no one is there and after 40 seconds it puts the monitor into sleep mode. The LCD then resumes normal operation when the user returns. For example, it won't be fooled by such shenanigans as leaving a cardboard cutout of yourself in front of it. It will only resume if there is movement up to 120cm in front of it.

Seagate's Replica makes backup copy of entire PC

Seagate's new Replica drives are designed to do one thing and do it simply: Back up your entire Windows PC. They literally make a replica of your system, operating system and all.
The Replica comes in two configurations. The entry-level US$130 Replica (250GB) is geared to single PC backup, while the US$200 version (500GB) comes with a dock and is capable of backing up multiple PCs.

Windows 7 to have an "'XP mode"

Microsoft is trying to make it easier to sway users of Windows XP onto the latest version of its operating system.
For some time now, the company has been quietly building a "Windows XP mode" that uses virtualization to allow Windows 7 to easily run applications designed for Windows XP. According to sources familiar with the product, the application compatibility mode is built on the Virtual PC technology that Microsoft acquired in 2003, when it scooped up the assets of Connectix.
By adding the compatibility mode, Microsoft is aiming to address one of the key shortcomings of Windows Vista: its compatibility issues with software designed for Windows XP and earlier versions of the operating system.

Microsoft sets dates for Windows 7 release candidate

Subscribers to Microsoft's MSDN and TechNet developer programs will get the code on April 30, with plans to make it broadly available starting May 5. The May 5 date matches one that was in a note briefly posted on Microsoft's Web site.
Build 7100 of Windows 7, the version presumed to be the release candidate, has been making the rounds on file-sharing services for the past day or so. The software maker has reportedly given the build to some early testers, though it has declined to confirm that.
The near-final release candidate version is expected to be the last public milestone before Microsoft finalizes the code for the new operating system. The software maker has refused to commit to launching the product before next January, but Microsoft has been aiming to get the product done so that it can find its way onto PCs sold during this year's holiday PC buying season.

What does Hulu offer that YouTube doesn't?

When it comes to offering full-length content on the Web, YouTube isn't ready
to yield to Hulu.
On Thursday, the San Bruno, Calif.-based video site of Google announced that it had reached agreement with notable entertainment companies, including Sony Pictures, Lions Gate Entertainment, and CBS (publisher of CNET News) to offer visitors full-length TV shows and feature films.
What this means is that YouTube wants to become a one-stop shop for everything video.
The strategy seems obvious. YouTube already has more than 100 million people visiting every month to watch a mixture of short clips created by amateurs and longer clips by semiprofessionals.
There's nothing to keep the site from offering a full range of video entertainment. Want to see videos of dogs riding skateboards or a rerun of Charlie's Angels? Want to see Brooke Shields in the island adventure movie Blue Lagoon? YouTube has it all for you. While some critics are slamming YouTube for acquiring content that is mostly several years old, it should be pointed out that syndication has kept many shows popular over the decades; people like watching reruns.
