Analyst sees Windows 7 done by summer

Ina Fried  |  Mar 10, 2009
Although slumping PC sales will certainly hurt Microsoft, the software maker's year could be better than expected, according to one financial analyst.

In a research note on Monday, Collins Stewart analyst Sandeep Aggarwal projected that Microsoft will finalize the code for Windows 7 by June or July and also suggested that a search deal with Yahoo is likely to happen sooner rather than later. And, although it won't be here this year, Aggarwal said that the next version of Office, codenamed Office 14, should come early next year.

Officially, Microsoft has said only that it will have Windows 7 on the market by next January, the three-year anniversary of Windows Vista's mainstream launch. However, the company has been aiming to have it out in time to be on PCs that ship during this year's holiday shopping season. PC industry sources told CNET News last month that Microsoft continues to push toward that goal.

1TB desktop SSD benchmarked, 4TB model on the way

Nate Lanxon  |  Mar 09, 2009

Over at CeBIT, component manufacturer OCZ has shown off a 1TB solid-state disk drive for desktop computers known as the Z Drive. It's not a standard 3.5-inch disk, however--it sits in a PCI-E slot, just like a desktop graphics card.

The secret lies on the inside of the beefy disk's enclosure: it actually comprises four separate 256GB SSDs, coupled together in a RAID 0 array, with 256MB of DDR2 RAM to serve as a cache.

Asus announces wireless USB LCD monitors

Nate Lanxon  |  Mar 09, 2009

After ushering in a revolutionary, perception-altering paradigm shift by changing the Eee PC's motto from "Easy to learn, easy to work, easy to play" to the far more enlightening "Easy, excellent, exciting", Asus dropped off news about its first wireless LCD computer monitors--the EzLink Series.

If memory serves--and it often does--these Wireless USB monitors were first hinted at in the middle of last year, when Realtek announced its collaboration with Asus on their creation. But we just got word from Asus that they now exist!

Details are scarce of course, and Asus hasn't got back to us regarding exact specifications. But it looks like these monitors will be the first to connect to your desktop or laptop without touching--like your parents in bed--and the promise is the same user experience conventional wired displays offer.

Cisco unleashes more Wireless-N Dual-Band products

Dong Ngo  |  Mar 06, 2009

It seems the transition to dual-band wireless networking is in full force at Cisco. The company announced recently three brand-new Wireless-N products that operate in both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies.

Sharing the same marketing brand "Linksys by Cisco," these new media-enabled home products include a bridge, the WET610N, and two routers, the WRT400N and the WRT320N.

The WET610N Wireless-N Ethernet Bridge is designed to add high-speed Wireless-N connectivity to devices that have an Ethernet port. Examples of these devices include desktop computers, settop boxes, game consoles, network printers, and certain models of TVs.

D-Link's Wi-Fi frame: Customize to the max

Alexandra Savvides  |  Mar 06, 2009

Don't like boring black? Change the border of the DSM-210 at your whim. (Credit: D-Link)

D-Link today unveiled its take on the ubiquitous digital photo frame. This one is a bit different from the standard vanity frame though--equipped with Wi-Fi, it lets users manage photos on their computer and stream image content from sites such as Flickr, Picasa and Facebook.

We've seen plenty of examples of these sorts of frames before--like Kodak's W series--but the DSM-210 can grab images from a much larger range of devices, including a NAS. It's also capable of connecting to FrameChannel, a free library of dynamic content which ranges from weather forecasts, RSS feeds and even English Premier League results for the football crazy.
