Psystar adds new Mac OS desktop

Psystar has decided to not let a legal battle get in the way of its product road map.

The company introduced the Open(3), which as the name implies is the third model that Psystar has shipped with Mac OS X preinstalled. As you may also recall, Apple has not taken kindly to Psystar's decision to ship such a product, and the two companies are currently exchanging legal briefs and arguments over whether Psystar has a right to sell Open Computers with Mac OS X.

Psystar's Open(3) is basically the same product as the Open Computer that it replaces, but the company swapped the larger tower chassis found on the first model for a slimline desktop chassis. It costs US$599 with a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GBs of memory, and a 500GB hard drive.

Back in October Psystar said it plans to ship a notebook with Mac OS X preinstalled, but it didn't set a target date and nothing has surfaced yet.

Microsoft set to unleash Internet Explorer 8

Ina Fried  |  Mar 19, 2009

Aiming to better compete against a growing list of rivals, Microsoft is launching Internet Explorer 8 today, the latest version of its Web browser.

IE 8, as the browser is known, was first shown a year ago and has been in testing for months. The new browser adds security improvements, a private browsing option, as well as the ability to save pre-defined "slices" of a Web page for at-a-glance viewing.

But perhaps the biggest change in the browser is one made behind the scenes--the decision to make the browser better adhere to Web standards. That should make life easier for Web developers in the future, but also poses compatibility challenges for sites that are optimized specifically for older versions of IE. In part to address this, Microsoft has a "compatibility" mode that lets Web sites indicate if they would prefer to be run by an engine that is more like older versions of the browser.

Google again delays debut of Project 10^100 ideas

Google had planned to announce on Tuesday the ideas for its Project 10-to-the-100th to improve the world through Google-sponsored work, but the search giant delayed the announcement a second time.

"We will unfortunately have to delay announcing the top ideas for Project 10^100 for a while longer. We've never managed a project like this and it's taken more time than we ever imagined possible. We apologize for our overoptimistic assumptions about how quickly we could analyze all the ideas that we've received, and thank everyone for their patience," said Andy Berndt, managing director of the Google Creative Lab, in an update to the January 26 blog post that announced the first delay.

Through the project, Google invited people to submit ideas for projects that could change the world for the better. Google is working on presenting the projects, and then plans to let the public vote on the top 20. An advisory board will select five that actually will be funded with $10 million.

D-Link offers high-end 425MBps 7.5TB NAS server

Casual home users might not need something like this, but the business world will definitely want the new NAS server from D-Link.

Last week, the company announced its all-new Stack DSN-1100 iSCSI SAN Array NAS server, which offers up to 7.5TB of storage and 425MBps of bandwidth. It achieves this high throughput speed thanks to IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregate Groups technology that combines the speeds of the device's four Gigabit Ethernet ports.

The NAS server include five bays, each of which can take a 3.5-inch SATA (or SATA-II) hard drive of up to 1.5TB. The company says that the bays will be able to accommodate higher-capacity drives after a new firmware update. These hard drives can be configured to RAID 0, 1, 1+0, and 5.

BMW designer takes a stab at the desktop

Rich Brown  |  Mar 17, 2009

The Level 10 concept case for ThermalTake by BMWDesignworks USA seems to actually exist. (Credit: BMW Group)

While not quite as revolutionary as Asus' modular PC concept from a few years back, BMW DesignworksUSA's Level 10 case for ThermalTake is a far cry from any other desktop chassis we've seen recently. Apparently, the Level 10 actually exists, too--at least according to the illicitly snapped shots from ThermalTake's CeBit booth by the Inquirer.

As you can see from the image, the Level 10 gives each PC component its own molded enclosure. We have no word on specs, availability, or price, although it appears to adhere to standard ATX motherboard design. You can read the full press release from BMW DesignworksUSA for the thought-process that went into the Level 10.

Assuming the Level 10 will make its way to retail, you will likely find it available as a standalone product, as well as from system builders like AVADirect, ABS, and others which typically build their PCs from off-the-shelf parts. Those vendors are usually anxious to adopt unique components, as we saw with AVADirect and the CoolerMaster Cosmos line last year, and we imagine the Level 10 will be hard for them to resist as well.
