Canon EOS dSLR thumbdrive won't take pictures

Over here at CNET Asia, we've seen some quirky thumbdrives, but this ought to hit the sweet spot for photographers. The acclaimed Canon EOS 5D Mark II has been miniaturized to fit a USB plug into the lens rear, which can be screwed into the faux camera body to protect the contact points.

We're guessing this USB peripheral is as petite as the Glico-issued Nikon collectible, though the difference is that the Canon thumbdrive actually works and is available in only 4GB capacity. It can be found on eBay for US$95. I wonder if we will ever see an 8GB version built to replicate the higher-end EOS 1Ds Mark III.

Microsoft goes after Apple online too

Ina Fried  |  Mar 30, 2009

In a new online ad, Web viewers can spin a wheel and see what they can get for a certain amount of money. In this spin, for example, readers can get a 13-inch MacBook, a twig, and a thumbtack. Or they can choose a Toshiba PC, a Samsung smartphone, and a skydiving lesson. (Credit: CNET)

After launching its most direct TV assault yet on Apple, Microsoft is extending the battle onto the Web.

The software maker has launched an online spot, in which Web surfers spin a wheel and compare what they can buy for the same amount of money. In each case, users can get a Mac and, say, pocket lint, or they can get a PC and two other things of value.

Web may be changing our brains, says expert

Nick Heath  |  Mar 30, 2009
The relentless bombardment of video, music and information online could permanently alter our brains and trigger neurological disorders, according to an eminent neurologist.

With Western children spending more than 6 hours a day sat in front of a screen, Baroness Susan Greenfield told the Gartner Identity and Access Management Summit that it's no coincidence an increasing number of children are being treated for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The brain is susceptible to being reshaped by our experiences, she said, citing a recent study that found London cabbies who memorised the streets of the capital displayed significant growth in the hippocampus, an area of the brain connected with memory.

At a party in San Francisco Wednesday night, Google unveiled the latest addition to its iGoogle start page service: A collection of themes designed by video game publishers. As pictured, Google offers a directory of the new gaming themes.

Like others produced through the iGoogle themes API, the new ones will change throughout the day. Marissa Mayer, Google's vice president of search products and user experience (far left), announced the gaming themes as part of this week's Game Developers Conference.

comScore survey tells Singaporeans their surfing habits

Darius Chang  |  Mar 27, 2009

Though the Internet usage patterns of Singaporeans are probably common knowledge by now, it's always good to know that a company still finds it interesting enough to put in the resources and effort and give an actual percentage breakdown. Global Internet information provider comScore has just released the results of its survey on how Singaporeans surf the World Wide Web, and, surprise, surprise, found out that half the time spent on the Internet involve social and entertainment Web pages.

Based on their findings taken from 2.5 million Singapore residents aged 15 and above in the month of February, instant messaging services take up almost a quarter of the average 21 hours they spend online. Entertainment sites like YouTube are next, with social networking sites such as FaceBook and Friendster close behind. Add in the time spent on Web-based mail and the total comes up to over 51 percent, with the rest spread quite evenly among news, blogs, gaming, etc.
