Rear end of next-gen Mac mini exposed in alleged spy photos

David Carnoy  |  Feb 20, 2009

This may be the back of the new Mac mini. (Credit: Apple Insider)

In the department of who-knows-if-this-is-real-or-not, we bring you some alleged "spy" shots of the back of the next-gen Mac Mini that are making their way around the blog circuit.

Everybody seems impressed that the thing has a whopping five USB ports. There are also connections for Ethernet, Firewire 800, and what appears to be two display ports--one Mini DisplayPort and one older mini DVI Mac display port. Why there's no HDMI is beyond us, but then again, this may--or may not--be the real deal, so we won't get too worked up.

Of course, there's no word when the next-gen Mac Mini will appear and how much it will cost. Rumor has it that it will include the new Nvidia 9400 graphics chipset found in the newer MacBook and MacBook Pros. We'll wait and see.

Anybody excited by these shots? Feel free to comment.

Toshiba buys Fujitsu hard disk drive business

Eileen Yu  |  Feb 18, 2009

Japanese electronics manufacturer Toshiba has agreed to buy over Fujitsu's hard disk drive (HDD) business, in a move aimed at expanding its footprint in the enterprise storage market.

In a statement released Tuesday, Fujitsu did not reveal how much the deal is worth but said the transaction is targeted to be completed in the first quarter of its fiscal 2009, ending June 30 this year.

Under the agreement, Fujitsu will transfer all its HDD-related businesses and functions to the new company, including HDD design, development, manufacturing and sales. It will retain a 20 percent share for "a certain period of time", before the new HDD business unit becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary under Toshiba, according to the statement.

The deal will enable Toshiba to "reinforce" its position as a vendor of small form-factor HDDs, commonly used in consumer electronics and mobile devices, the company said.

The agreement will also pave the way for Toshiba to enter the HDD market for enterprise servers and data storage system applications, enabling the company to expand its footprint in the solid state drive (SSD) segment.

Toshiba is hoping the deal will boost its share of the overall HDD market to over 20 percent by 2015.

Discussions between the two companies were made known last month when Fujitsu said it will halt production of read/write heads for HDDs, and Toshiba confirmed it was involved in negations regarding Fujitsu's HDD business.

In a separate statement Tuesday, Fujitsu said it is projecting a heavier net loss than previously forecast for the year, ending March 31, of 50 billion yen (US$545 million). It earlier estimated a net loss of 20 billion yen (US$218 million). As a result of the HDD business reorganization and transfers, including its HDD media business to Showa Denko K. K., Fujitsu expects to incur related losses totaling some 35 billion yen (US$382 million) for the full fiscal year.

The following businesses will be transferred to Toshiba:
  • Fujitsu's HDD development, manufacturing and sales divisions;
  • Fujitsu Computer Products Corporation of the Philippines and Fujitsu Thailand, which are both HDD manufacturing subsidiaries;
  • HDD design, development, quality assurance and other departments under Yamagata Fujitsu;
  • Fujitsu Laboratories' HDD technology development department; and
  • HDD sales and marketing offices outside Japan.

  • DisplayLink now for anyone

    Eric Franklin  |  Feb 13, 2009

    (Credit: Diamond)

    If you've ever been interested in the DisplayLink technology--which allows you to daisy-chain up to six monitors to one system via USB--but you don't actually own a Displaylink monitor, you're in luck.

    This week Diamond Multimedia introduced its first DisplayLink-enabled USB graphics adapter, the BVU160. The adapter supports VGA, DVI, and resolutions up to 1,600 x 1,200 and 1,680 x 1,050.

    Once connected, your monitor will behave as if it is DisplayLink-enabled and you'll be able to add an additional monitor simply via USB. It's unclear as of now if you'll need additional adapters to add additional monitors.

    The adapter will be available at the end of February on Diamond's US Web site at a price TBD.

    Sources: Windows 7 moving toward 2009 release

    Ina Fried  |  Feb 13, 2009

    Microsoft is moving forward with plans to launch Windows 7 this year, although the company still refuses to publicly commit to that goal.

    PC industry sources in Asia and the US tell CNET News that they have heard things are on track to launch by this year's holiday shopping season, which has been Microsoft's internal target for some time.

    Microsoft is also putting the finishing touches on a program to offer Vista buyers a free or low-cost update to Windows 7. That program could kick off as early as July, sources said.

    The company has run such "technology guarantee" programs in the past, typically allowing each PC maker to set the exact rules, but essentially offering buyers after a certain time to get a free upgrade to the next version. (TechArp has a post with even more details on Microsoft's planned Windows 7 Upgrade Program.)

    Report: Apple to stream video to iTunes users

    Greg Sandoval  |  Feb 12, 2009

    Apple is preparing to allow iTunes customers to stream video from the company's servers to any Web-enabled device, according to a film industry source.

    The source declined to provide details but did confirm a report published Wednesday by the blog AppleInsider, which broke the news.

    An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

    According to the report, Apple is working on a feature for iTunes 8 that will enable users to stream movies and TV shows "for playback anywhere," and in this way help them avoid having to store large video files on their hard drives.
