Waterproof mouse soaks up serious sweat

Justin Yu  |  Jan 15, 2009

I just can't get behind the concept of waterproof gadgets. An iPod Shuffle that you can submerge is kinda cool, but you still need waterproof headphones. Maybe you can use it in the shower with these speakers. But do you really need a waterproof mouse?

Your wallet says no, but USB Geek says yes. This five-button USB optical mouse is made with sealed silicone, making it completely waterproof. Despite how uncomfortable you feel about mixing water and lasers, USB Geek claims the optical sensor maintains precision on any surface. So in case you misplace your waterproof mouse pad, feel free to use that sea turtle's shell next time you're scuba diving and simply must check out what's new on CNET.

The mouse will also come in handy if you suffer from hyperhidrosis, no sweat.

Apple has confirmed that CEO Steve Jobs will step down from his CEO post while recuperating from a hormone imbalance. His absence will stretch until the end of June.

Tim Cook, Apple's chief operating officer, will run the company during Jobs' absence, according an email Jobs sent to Apple employees that was released to the media.

Jobs said in the email:
Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week, I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

LaCie flaunts colorful new flatware

Justin Yu  |  Jan 15, 2009
These tangle-free LaCie Flat Cables must work because they managed to slip by our sticky fingers at the time of their release back in early December '08. LaCie makes these multicolored neon cords in a variety of interfaces, including:

  • USB A to B
  • USB A to Mini B
  • USB A male to A female
  • FireWire 400 to FireWire 400
  • FireWire 400 to FireWire 800
  • FireWire 800 to FireWire 800
  • eSATA to eSATA

A French design firm enlisted by LaCie came up with the flat strip shape that neatly folds into a coil to prevent tangles. The Flat Cables also come with 24 labels so you'll never wonder what plug goes with a particular device again.

As always, though, design innovation and pretty colors (see: Apple) come at a premium: would you pay 10 dollars each for these cables? Sound off in the comments section!

More pictures after the jump.

Seagate Cheetahs now run even faster

Dong Ngo  |  Jan 14, 2009
After some time focusing on 2.5-inch hard drives and sort of neglecting the 3.5-inch segment, Seagate announced on Tuesday its new Cheetah 15K.7 and Cheetah NS.2 hard drives.

These high-speed drives are geared toward enterprise storage environments by offering speed, capacity, and reliability, along with low power consumption.

Both drives offer up to 600GB of storage and feature second-generation PowerTrim technology, which dynamically optimizes drive power consumption at all levels of activity. However, the Cheetah 15K.7 is geared toward the highest possible performance, while the Cheetah NS.2 focuses on power savings. Seagate claims the NS.2 uses upward of 20 percent less energy than its predecessor.

Note that these are high-end enterprise-grade hard drives. In this area, capacity is still much lower than in the consumer sector. Seagate released a 1.5TB SATA hard drive for desktop computers a while ago.

USB 3.0 will crush eSATA, FireWire

Alex Serpo  |  Jan 14, 2009

CES
Intel demonstrated a working version of USB 3.0 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week. Here's why it will make eSATA and FireWire obsolete.

When USB 3.0 is expected to hit the market in early 2010, it will have been 10 years since the now ubiquitous USB 2.0 was introduced (April 2000). The current USB 2.0 specification runs at a theoretical maximum speed of 480Mbps, and can supply power (for those looking for the hard details, you can find the USB 2.0 specification here (zip file).

According to the USB Implementers Forum, there were 2 billion USB 2.0 devices shipped in 2006 (one for every three people in the world), and the install base was 6 billion (almost one for every person in the world). In November 2007, the USB Implementers forum announced the USB 3.0 specifications, and Intel officially demonstrated the technology at CES 2009.

Now, the juice: USB 3.0 promises a theoretical maximum rate of 5Gbps, meaning it's 10 times faster than USB 2.0. USB 3.0 is also full duplex, meaning it can upload and download simultaneously (it's bi-directional); USB 2.0 is only half duplex.
