Computer newbs kick QWERTY to the curb

Sharon Vaknin  |  Jan 30, 2009

Finally, a keyboard that makes sense.
(Credit: Fast Finger Keyboard)

Say goodbye to QWERTY because a new revolution of keyboards has begun. Call her crazy, but Faith Quintavell, the creator of the Fast Finger Keyboard, has released a keyboard whose keys are in the order of the ABC's.

After she noticed a store clerk use what she calls the 'hunt and peck" method of typing, she was inspired and created this intuitive keyboard. The Fast Finger Keyboard is especially helpful for beginner typists, as they can simply plug in the keyboard, and begin typing (assuming they know their ABCs) Like the Keyboard for Blondes, this keyboard has the quick IM keys with phrases like "LOL", "CYA", and "BTW". Additionally, if not everyone in the household wants to give up QWERTY, the keyboard can be switched by pressing a special button.

Perhaps with this keyboard, gramps can answer your emails a little quicker, and your kid sister can get on MySpace a little sooner. For US$27.95, the keyboard can be purchased on her Web site, and will soon be available on US Amazon.com

Made-in-Japan Wi-Fi blocking paint

Juniper Foo  |  Jan 29, 2009
While this sounds most unneighborly, since it means your nosy-parker neighbors can't piggyback off your wireless connection anytime, the Japanese haven't done this just to up their rep for wacky innovations. For the price of a can of house paint, this may very well be one of the most cost-effective way to secure your office wireless network against hackers and freeloaders, particularly in a time of thrift.

How this works is researchers at the University of Tokyo have blended paint with aluminium-iron oxide which has been found to resonate at the same frequencies used by Wi-Fi, thus cancelling out any electromagnetic waves in that frequency. Which sounds like really cool Minority Report stuff. Of course, it's only bound to attract the attention of every hackers out there who can't resist a challenge.

Web-based Sumo Paint is fat on features

John Chan  |  Jan 28, 2009

(Credit: Sumo Paint)

There have been Web-based photo editors in the past that let you do basic things like scribble on your images or crop a certain section. Photoshop Express, Adobe's online editing solution, lets you do quite a bit more, but today, I found out about Sumo Paint which surpasses even Adobe's online application when it comes to features.

This Finland-based Web app lets you open images from your computer, a URL or its own servers if you sign up for a free Sumo account. This means you are not forced to sign up with the company to make use of its app. Once you've opened the file, you can edit it just like how it's done on a desktop application, except this is on a browser. We were pretty impressed with the options available, including layers, clone and blur effects and also basic photo-editing adjustments such as contrast, saturation and color balance, to name a few.

Clickfree portable drive cinches up data backup

Justin Yu  |  Jan 28, 2009

(Credit: Clickfree)

Forget about annoying drag-and-drop data backups and scheduled timers--the Clickfree Portable Backup Drive makes it so easy that it might convince you to start dual-saving your files. All the software you need is actually preloaded onto the drive and starts up automatically when you plug it in. From there, you can select exactly what kinds of files you want the Clickfree to find, organize, and back up, or you can simply make a carbon copy of your desktop master drive.

The drive is available in several capacities up to 500GB and works with both Mac and Windows. We have to ding it for a lack of FireWire as we do with all externals, but overall we don't have much to complain about.

The features are a great deal for the price per gigabyte, the data transfers are just about right for a drive this size, and to top it all off, the Clickfrees come in a variety of colors depending on capacity. If you're tired of manually backing up your sensitive data, we recommend investing in a Clickfree for a truly pain-free experience.

Is 2TB really enough?

Darius Chang  |  Jan 28, 2009

If you have been religiously downloading videos and music online (legally, we hope), you would probably have heaps of DVDs and multiple harddisks lying around. In fact, even the most modest Torrent user will probably fill a 1TB drive in a matter of months.

So when Western Digital announced its WD Caviar Green with a massive 2TB storage capacity, we sighed in relief. Not only does this peripheral go for a reasonable US$299, it's nice to know that we have yet to reach the limits of cheap magnetic storage media. If you are interested in the world's first 3.5-inch 2TB drive, here are a few more specifications to feast your eyes on.

  • Transfer rate: 2.0 Gigabits/s (SATA)
  • Power consumption: 0.97 to 7.4 watts
  • Noise: 25 to 29 decibels
  • Weight: 0.73kg
  • The WD Caviar Green is now available worldwide through distributors and resellers.
