Apple offers advice on 10.5.6 upgrade problems

Tom Krazit  |  Dec 19, 2008

Apple has acknowledged an issue encountered by some Leopard users trying to install the company's latest update released Monday.

In a support document posted to its site, Apple described an issue in which a Mac would hang on a "Configuring installation" window when trying to install Mac OS X 10.5.6. That was apparently the result of an incomplete update getting seeded into the Software Update process, and Mac OS X will freak out if it tries to install a partially downloaded update.

Yahoo Mail's social upgrade suffers a burp

Stephen Shankland  |  Dec 19, 2008

Yahoo is proud of new features it began rolling into its online mail service this week, but some users had troubles with the upgrade.

"We found that some people were prevented from accessing the new social features in mail today for a short period of time," spokeswoman Karen Mahon said Thursday. "We have fixed the issue, so people should not have any issues with the new features."

The upgrade adds social features and six applications into Yahoo Mail. For example, people can sort their in-box to show only messages from their contacts, and applications can be used to show all photos in a person's mail archive.

"I have been unable to access my mail since I opened this page to find out what this new application was all about. I am not happy!!!" posted one commenter on Yahoo's announcement. And David Cassel said in an e-mail to CNET News that he also was affected: "Instead of upgrading Yahoo's mail, they broke it!"

Those who've signed up for a new Yahoo profile will get the social features, but only power users were invited to test the applications element, Yahoo said. The applications beta test will be broadened to more people "over the coming months."

Voice, video chat coming to Mac Messenger

Jason Parker  |  Dec 19, 2008

(Credit: CNET Networks)

In some great news from Mac Mojo, the Office for Mac team blog, it looks like Windows Live Messenger for Mac will receive a major update sometime early next year. The biggest new feature update will be AV support for the personal client, which means users will be able to participate in cross-platform audio and video chat using the personal version of Microsoft Messenger for Mac.

They are also working on additional features for the personal Windows Live Messenger client and are on track to preview some of the new implementations at Macworld in January at the MacBU booth. The new Windows Live Messenger for Mac with AV support should be available as a beta sometime early next year.

Memory-maker Transcend offers another place for memory storage

Joshua Goldman  |  Dec 18, 2008

On the short list of things I appreciate in a digital photo frame is a lot of internal memory. Sure, it's cheap enough to buy an extra SD card, but when a flash-memory manufacturer like Transcend makes a frame, I expect it to have a healthy amount. The newly announced PF810 has 2GB thankfully, but also adds a couple things that I just don't care about.

For one, the frame looks decent enough, but what's with the rhinestones on the corners? It's also touch-sensitive, which could be fun if Transcend didn't use a finger-print-collecting gloss-black finish.

The 8-inch, 800 x 600-resolution display sounds OK, and the company's new NaturaTone intelligent skin color processing and other image enhancements are promising, too. Like Transcend's 7-inch photo frames, the PF810 has MP3 and video playback (presumably motion JPEG) as well as a built-in FM radio tuner, alarm clock, and calendar functions. Honestly, I can't say I'd ever use a frame to listen to the radio, but if someone out there can explain the scenario where you would, please comment.

Pricing and release date weren't announced, but the company's PF720 frame has similar features and sells for around US$100.

Rumor has Apple updating Mac Mini

Steven Musil and Tom Krazit   |  Dec 17, 2008

Apple will announce a long-overdue upgrade to its Mac Mini during the Macworld Expo next month, according to a Wired.com report.

The report was attributed to an alleged corporate employee at Apple who wished to remain anonymous--"to keep his job", Wired noted. While he was apparently comfortable disclosing that a new desktop would be announced in January, he balked at disclosing any other details.

Rumors have been circulating for more than a year that Apple was getting ready to kill the little cube, and Gizmodo speculated that the end was near when it reported in October that two European retailers were told they can no longer order the S$1,048 (US$744.27) box from Apple. However, it's possible Apple was simply gearing up to update the internal hardware in the Mac Mini, which has languished for quite a while with outdated chips.
