Feature films coming to YouTube

Greg Sandoval  |  Nov 07, 2008

YouTube will begin offering feature films produced by at least one of the biggest Hollywood movie studios possibly as early as next month, according to an executive with a major entertainment company.

For months, Google, YouTube's parent company, has been talking to the major film companies about launching an ad-supported, streaming movie service, two execs with knowledge of the negotiations told CNET News. "It's not imminent," said one of the executives. "But it's going to happen. I would say you can expect to see it, if all goes well, sometime within the next 30 to 90 days."

To be sure, not all the studios are prepared to give YouTube full-length movies. Canadian film company Lionsgate agreed in July to give YouTube access to only short movie clips. At least one other studio is trying to cut a similar deal for short-form content with Google, said a separate high-level industry insider.

There's skepticism in some circles about whether enough ads can be placed into a streaming movie to make it profitable without also overloading viewers with commercials. Another sticking point with some of the film companies is Google's insistence on using a specific ad format for feature films, according to two studio sources. They declined to specify which ad unit Google prefers--whether it's prerolls or postrolls or something else--but said some of the studios want the final say on how to advertise to viewers.

Video: Hands-on Windows 7 alpha

Robert Vamosi  |  Nov 07, 2008

Our colleagues in the US have got their hands on an alpha version of the upcoming Vista replacement from Microsoft, Windows 7.

Take a look to see the changes that have been made to the menus, with a new login screen, better file transfer via Bluetooth and a feature taken from Office 2007 called ribbons.

This groups tasks into sets in an attempt to make things easier, although it does mean that all the buttons you're used to seeing have been moved around. The video also looks at the improved User Account control, to try and reduce the annoying pop-up messages you get in Vista.

We're expecting to see Windows 7 around 2010, although there's an outside chance it'll be ready for Christmas 2009.

Honey, I shrunk the Wireless-N USB adapter

Most laptops these days come with built-in Wi-Fi or even Wireless-N capability. However, if you have an old laptop or a game console that you want to hook to the Internet wirelessly, I've got some good news...and it's tiny.

I just got my hands on the GW-USMicronN, Planex's latest USB Wireless-N adapter that the company announced at the end of last month. I've seen a lot of USB wireless adapters and I am generally not impressed with them.

The GW-USMicronN, however, is very different: it's tiny--just about a sixth of the D-Link DWA160, which is already rather compact among USB Wireless-N adapters.

Despite the small form factor, the GW-USMicronN supports Wireless-N with MIMO technology and is backward-compatible with Wireless-G. It supports all encryption standards and Wi-Fi Protected Setup, which allows you to quickly hook a wireless device to a network without having to enter the hard-to-remember encryption key.

Windows exec tackles CNET readers' questions

Ina Fried  |  Nov 07, 2008

Microsoft's Jon DeVaan, talking Windows 7 at the WinHEC 2008 conference in Los Angeles. (Credit: Ina Fried/CNET News)

Over the past few days, readers have been diligently sending me their Windows 7 questions and on Wednesday I had a chance to put some of them to Jon DeVaan, the head of the Windows core operating system division.

Microsoft has talked about the ability of Windows 7 to run on a Netbook, adding today that it can fit on a solid-state drive as small as 16GB. But just how much space does that leave?
Devaan said Microsoft has done a lot of work to ensure that Windows 7 occupies a smaller amount of both memory and storage, allowing it to run comfortably on a 16GB drive.

So how much space is left on that drive?
It's over half by quite a bit.

WD brings HD content playback to the masses

Reuben Lee  |  Nov 06, 2008

These days, with large flat-panel prices going south, everyone wants in on the high-definition (HD) deal. Yours truly included. However, there's just one tiny problem about adopting the technology. It isn't quite that easy playing those HD files. Besides the initial outlay for an HD-capable player--which could be a powerful laptop with HDMI output or a third-party network media player with an onboard hard drive--there's usually a degree of technical expertise required.

So it was with much anticipation and trepidation that I checked out Western Digital's new TV HD media player, with its claim to make the HD transition a little easier (and more affordable) for the average consumer. Unveiled to the Singapore press for the first time today, this nifty device offers a fairly simple solution. Plug in any USB mass storage device (portable hard drives, thumbdrives, iPods, what have you) to the player, hook up the gadget to a TV, and voila. Your very own personal HD media solution.
