Nvidia unveils new professional graphics card

Dong Ngo  |  Nov 13, 2008

You think your SLI or CrossFire setup of the latest graphics card is powerful? Well, it might be. However, it's nothing compared to the single card that Nvidia introduced on recently.

The Quadro FX 5800 is arguably the most powerful professional graphics card in the world...for now. Unfortunately, it's not a gaming card.

The new card works best for professionals searching for oil, diagnosing illness, or styling the next high-performance luxury vehicle, or anyone with the need for advanced visual-computing solutions.

The Quadro FX 5800 has 240 CUDA programmable parallel cores and features 4GB of graphics RAM. (To put this in perspective, a Windows 32-bit computer, like most computers out there, can address just a little more than 3.5GB of RAM). All this results in unprecedented performance and scalability. The Quadro FX 5800 is now able to visualize and interpret massive datasets that until now were unattainable on a workstation graphics board.

Other advanced features of the card include:

  • Interactive 4D modeling with time lapse capabilities
  • Massive memory bandwidth of up to 102GB per second
  • Fill rates that exceed 52 billion texels per second and geometry performance of 300 million triangles per second
  • Support for next-generation OpenGL and Microsoft DirectX 10 applications
  • Advanced multisystem and multidevice visualization environments with Quadro G-Sync II

With great power comes great...price. The new Quadro FX 5800 is estimated to cost about US$3,500 and will be available shortly via third-party card makers.

Facing a flash-based memory market downturn, flash chip makers are getting creative. Recently, Super Talent unveiled a fancy thumbdrive with a black leather carrying case and on Wednesday, Transcend announced its new USB drive that's no less eye-catching.

However, you will still have to look very carefully to find it. The new Transcend JetFlash T5 drive is tiny, measuring only 30.3 x 12.3 x 2.4mm and weighs merely 2g.

InfoWorld says Windows 7's not that fast

    Ina Fried  |  Nov 12, 2008

While many of those who have played around with the early version of Windows 7 have noted that it feels pretty zippy, especially for a pre-beta version, InfoWorld says early benchmarks show the software is just on par with its predecessor.

In an article on Monday, InfoWorld said that Windows 7 is a "virtual twin" of Vista when it comes to performance.

On the one hand, this could be seen as bad news, considering Microsoft's efforts to position Windows 7 as better performing. At the same time, this is a pre-beta version. Early releases often lag in performance since optimizations tend to be among the later steps in operating system development.

For its part, Microsoft is encouraging folks to withhold judgment.

"Microsoft consistently encourages people to hold benchmark tests until software is finished and ready for broad release," Microsoft said in a statement to CNET News.

Running Windows on Mac just got faster

    Darius Chang  |  Nov 12, 2008

Although Boot Camp on Mac OS X Leopard allows for dual-booting Windows and Mac operating systems, you'll still need third-party software to be able to use both platforms at the same time. Enter Parallels, one of the few software which allows an Apple machine to use both Mac and Windows programs at the same time.

Its latest iteration, Parallels Desktop 4.0, not only runs faster but also promises a host of new features. You can now access remote storage devices on both platforms at the same time, while value-added programs such as Acronis True Image 11 Home and Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 are bundled for free. Best of all, if you purchased Parallels Desktop 3.0 after September 1, you can get a free upgrade. Otherwise, it costs US$39.99 to upgrade and US$79.99 for a fresh installation.

    Hitachi announces self-encrypting hard drive

    Dong Ngo  |  Nov 12, 2008

If you are a fan of notebook hard drives with hardware-level encryption, apart from Seagate, you now can turn to Hitachi.

The company announced the third generation of its 2.5-inch Travelstar hard drive with built-in encryption, the Travelstar 5K500.B. This is a 5,400rpm, SATA II hard drive that comes in capacities ranging from 120GB to 500GB, and is designed for notebook PCs, external storage, gaming consoles, as well as other mobile and enterprise applications.

Considering the wide range of implementation, the new hard drive comes in a few versions. The one for notebooks focuses on low power consumption. The version used for enterprise has Hitachi's Enhanced Availability technology that lets the drive operate 24 hours a day at high-speed.

Nonetheless, according to Hitachi, its new drive features a halogen-free design, consumes less energy, and is more eco-friendly than other drives of the same type.

The new Travelstar 5K500.B's features optional hard-drive-level Bulk Data Encryption. The "optional" notation means that customers need to ask for the data encryption feature to be turned on at the manufacturer.
