Google launches 10th anniversary site, help-the-world project

Stephen Shankland  |  Sep 24, 2008
Celebrating its recent anniversary, Google has published a guided tour of its ten years in business and launched its Project 10 to the 100th to try to improve the world.

The anniversary site offers a timeline that spotlights historical moments such as Andy Bechtolsheim's US$100,000 spur-of-the-moment investment in 1998, the date in 2000 when it reached 1 billion pages in its index of the Web, the 2002 adoption of a pay-per-click model for AdWords advertisers using the search engine for ads, the 2004 filing for an initial public offering, iGoogle and Mobile Web Search in 2005, Google Finance and Google Docs in 2006, and Universal Search and Gears in 2007.

Project 10 to the 100th--which refers to a googol, the number of 1 followed by 100 zeros--aims to let people help each other, part of the company's do-good ethos. People can submit their ideas by October 20, and Google will fund the best with US$10 million. An advisory board will select up to five winning ideas.

Confirmed: The blogosphere is mainstream

Dan Faber  |  Sep 24, 2008
With nearly 1 million posts a day, the blogosphere is overflowing with content and now fully established as a mainstream rather than fringe phenomenon. Traditional media have adopted blogs as a complementary form of content to the traditional news and feature stories. According to Techhnorati's latest report on the state of the blogosphere, many bloggers are making money. Technorati surveyed a sample of about 1,000 bloggers and found that the mean annual revenue for advertising is US$6,000, but sites with 100,000 or more unique visitors are generating more than US$75,000 in revenue.

None of these results is surprising. Blogs started as a means of personal expression, and now offer more than a billion people the tools to self-publish. Traditional publishers and an armada of new, innovative publishers, as well as millions of readers, have embraced the blog format and ethos. Marketers, readers, publishers, politicians, and most people on the planet with access to the Internet understand the diversity of voices, as well as the cacophony, that blogs allow. The more savvy bloggers are getting sophisticated about search engine optimization, developing a niche, and making money. Technorati will dribble out more results from its survey this week, illuminating the what, why, and how of blogging.

Toshiba gets colorful with external hard drives

Dong Ngo  |  Sep 23, 2008
Despite the no-frills name--Toshiba USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive--the company's new line of pocket-size drives boast some unique and colorful designs and features.

The drives are housed in a sleek, glossy chassis embedded with contemporary graphics and available in four color schemes: Electric Blue & Black, Carbon Grey, Hot Rod Red, and Gecko Green. They offer storage capacity up to 400GB, larger than most existing products though still less than the 500GB OWC Mercury.

The new drives ship with NTI Shadow backup software, as well as internal shock sensor and ramp-loading technology that deliver extra protection against standard wear and tear and anti-slip footpads that help the drive stay in place. Though not the most compact, the drives weigh only 6 ounces and measure 0.7 inches by 3.2 inches by 5.0 inches, making them relatively small and easy to carry on-the-go.

HP's alternate experience centers

Philip Wong  |  Sep 22, 2008

In the not-so-distant future, you'll be able to sample and experience HP products and services in the least expected venues. To reach out to even more consumers, the Palo Alto company has tied up with various fashion and entertainment industry partners to promote its wares. This is on top of the 7,500 new retail partner stores slated for launch across 1,000 Asia-Pacific cities to beef up its regional presence.

Under its latest HP alternative experience center initiative, the IT solutions provider has identified three key customer segments in the youth, family and women markets to implement its new shop-and-play concept. The following are details of the collaborations as well as their respective propositions to bring HP's offerings beyond the usual IT malls and conventional retail channels.

Dual-core Atom heading for Nettops

Darius Chang  |  Sep 22, 2008

Intel's low-powered Atom processor is heading for the dual-core era with the Atom 330 chip. Running at 1.6GHz, the new model has started shipping and will appear in low-cost Nettops in the near future.

The Atom processor is the chipmaker's solution for users who do not need the full power of a Core 2 Duo chip. With its low heat signature and power consumption, it allows desktop chassis to reach smaller form factors compared with previous offerings. Moreover, Atom silicon is significantly cheaper than its Core 2 Duo counterpart.

Despite the fact that the Atom 330's clockspeed is the same as the Core 2 Duo processor used in the MacBook Air and ThinkPad X300, do not expect similar performances. For one, the Atom 330 has only 1MB L2 cache, while the Core 2 Duo SL9300 used in laptops comes with 6MB. As the L2 cache is the first and fastest data resource used by the CPU, the bigger the cache the faster the machine can complete a task. Moreover, the Atom 330 can support only a frontside bus speed of 667MHz, while its Core 2 Duo equivalent goes up to 1,066MHz.

Don't expect to see the dual-core Atom 330 processor appearing in Netbooks anytime soon. According to an Intel representative, these new chips are not slated for Netbooks at this time. Though there is nothing to stop PC makers from slotting these chips into their low-cost notebooks, one important factor might hinder its usage. At 8W, it draws four times more power than the single-core 1.6GHz Atom chip currently in use by Netbooks. Considering that few of these systems are able to break the 5-hour mark, a dual-core Atom Netbook will either have abysmal battery life or require a huge battery.

No vendor has been able to provide an availability date for the first dual-core Atom Nettop at this time, but it will no doubt make an appearance in models such as Dell's Studio Hybrid soon.
