Warner Bros. moves against Web copies of Dark Knight

Greg Sandoval  |  Jul 24, 2008
Warner Bros. is going after the sites that posted pirated copies of the film The Dark Knight.

CNET News reported Monday that copies of the hit new Batman film could be found at several Web sites. Now, a spokesman for the studio said Warner Bros. is taking action.

"We actively search for these sites and services and have them taken down," said Craig Hoffman, a spokesman for Warner Bros.' worldwide antipiracy and technical operations. "While so far we have had compliance with our requests, we certainly reserve our rights to take whatever legal action necessary to protect our intellectual property."

Warner Bros. does see one positive in the pirating of The Dark Knight, Hoffman said. No copies of the film circulated before the film's theater debut.

So when do we get over with it and declare Google a monopoly?

Charles Cooper  |  Jul 24, 2008
I did a double take recently after listening to Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell acknowledge that his company was ready to lose even more money in online services in the near term, if that's what it takes to catch Google. During the company's earnings call last week, Liddell indicated that Microsoft is pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into its online advertising business, an investment he allowed would be "a drag" on the rest of the company.
Outside of the occasional fit of Monkeyboy inspiration, Microsoft's managers are a sober bunch. They don't decide things haphazardly and they don't rush in reaction to current events. But their willingness to dig deep into Microsoft's (enviably deep) pockets in pursuit of Google was a remarkably telling comment. Much like WordPerfect and Borland and Novell, which at one time sought unsuccessfully to play catch-up to Microsoft, the shoe's now on the other foot--and it's irritating the hell out of Microsoft.

Just how far ahead of everyone is Google? Consider the following, courtesy of Efficient Frontier Insights: Google now enjoys more than a 77 percent share of the search ad market. That's just the headline number. Take a closer look and you see what a marvelous franchise Google enjoys.

Hard drive industry shows resilience

Erica Ogg  |  Jul 23, 2008
Despite industry leader Seagate's poor showing earlier this year, analysts say there's still plenty of demand for harddisk drives.

In the first quarter of 2008, HDD vendors shipped 137 million drives, which is 21 percent higher than the same quarter the year before, according to iSuppli, a market research company which keeps track of the industry. Those drives are primarily being snapped inside notebook PCs, other portable devices, desktops, and external drives.

Things weren't looking so good when Seagate reported its earnings in April, and revenue was below what analysts were expecting. But the demand for HDDs wasn't the issue, according to iSuppli.

"Seagate's second-quarter net income did come in lower than expected, but this was not because of any decline in demand, but rather due to lower prices for its products," according to Krishna Chander, iSuppli's senior analyst for storage systems.

Apple getting ready for "product transition"

Tom Krazit  |  Jul 23, 2008
Let the guessing begin.

Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer's decision to warn financial analysts Monday that Apple's fourth-quarter gross margins will be negatively impacted by a "product transition" should be enough to get the rumor wheels turning: Of course, it doesn't take all that much. The remark came within yet another Apple's earnings report that produced stellar numbers for the previous quarter but an outlook below what Wall Street had been expecting.

Oppenheimer deftly avoided several questions from analysts who tried to get a little more information on just what that "product transition" might involve. He used the exact same phrase last year in July during an earnings call to warn analysts of pretty much the exact same situation: that the transition would cause lower profits for the upcoming quarter. The result? New iMacs in August, and the iPod touch in September.

Fitting mouse for Hellboy

Ahmad Jamaluddin  |  Jul 23, 2008
If Hellboy has problems using the mouse because of his big right arm, then this mouse seems most suitable for him.

The Victorian-style Steampunk rodent is surely not for use in human hands. It is so big that it is the size of a cat's head. It looks uncomfortable due to its massive size and also because of the heavy materials it is made of, namely leather and brass.

Clicking on the protruding buttons and dragging the mouse will require super-human strength, one that's forged in the fires of hell perhaps?
