ioSafe, a company specializing in disaster-proof storage devices, today launched the world's first internal hard drive with built-in disaster protection called ioSafe 3.5. On the outside, the new drive has the same form factor and functions just like any regular 3.5-inch desktop SATA hard drive. However, on the inside, it's definitely something I've never seen before.
The ioSafe 3.5 is actually a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive (found in laptops) covered by layers of protective materials. The materials, together with ioSafe's proprietary circuit board transform the drive into a 3.5-inch form factor drive that can withstand 15 minutes of intense heat up to 1,400 degree Fahrenheit and is waterproof down to a 5ft depth. To put this in perspective, most fireplaces burn at only 700 to 800 degrees.
ioSafe came to CNET to show off its new product's ability to handle extreme heat and here are a few photos of its impressive and convincing demo:

BERLIN, GERMANY--Born out of a collaboration between HP and DreamWorks Animation, the HP DreamColor LP2480zx display was unveiled for the first time at the company's Connecting Your World event Tuesday. The name is a mouthful, but as it costs less than a quarter the price of an equivalent model on the market, we're more than willing to stomach the awkward model numbering. At US$3,499 a pop (now available worldwide), you are essentially looking at a high color-fidelity, 30bit, 1 billion-color, widescreen display with LED backlighting.
Pictured above is a side-by-side comparison between a standard LCD screen (left) and the DreamColor model (right). The difference may not be that obvious in the image, but since we had the opportunity of eyeballing this upclose, we can attest that the primary colors do indeed carry more punch as claimed by HP. Some other features include 1,920 x 1,200 native resolution, a one-touch access to preset color spaces, night vision interface for darkroom conditions, proprietary software to mange the display and a calibration kit.
We're still not sure about the wisdom of having a USB key so small that it can get lost among pocket change but, if you want something truly tiny, this is it.
The appropriately named Nano Flash Drive from Imation comes in storage capacities ranging from 1GB to 8GB, but the size remains the same for all of them: 1.75 inches long and a half-inch wide, weighing a scant 1.3 ounces. Not surprisingly, Imation says it's the smallest flash drive of its kind that it offers.
In our view, its smartest feature has nothing to do with the storage technology: It has a swivel cap that can't get lost. Then again, if you can't find the key itself, that won't matter much.
The video on the new Touchsmart interface is now available after the break.
BERLIN, GERMANY--Remember the SmartCenter on HP's TouchSmart series? It's now the TouchSmart Suite on the new IQ500 multimedia desktop. Besides a slimmer side profile and a smaller footprint compared with the earlier TouchSmart PC, the IQ500 also received a spanking new touch interface in the overhaul. If you've seen TouchFLO 3D on the HTC Touch Diamond, imagine it now on your desktop.
There are two rows of touch-enabled menus in this new UI. At the bottom is a chain of applications you can drag-and-drop onto the "dock" on the top row. Unlike resistive touch technology, the TouchSmart uses optical sensors around the display. It is able to recognize two points of contact at any one time and you can manipulate the size of the top strip simply by "pinching" or expanding it.
