NEC taking curved-screen display to pro market

Stephen Shankland  |  Jan 21, 2008
Dell got a lot of attention at the Consumer Electronics Show when its Alienware group showed a mammoth curved-screen display for gamers, but NEC is hoping it'll reach an even bigger market with its own version of the technology.

NEC was showing off a prototype of its 42-inch, 2,880 x 900-pixel, curved-screen display, the CRVD-LMD, at the Macworld trade show here this week. The monitor is geared for professionals such as medical scanners, photographers, and video animators who need an immersive display and a lot of real estate but don't want their view interrupted by the frames of multiple monitors, said NEC marketing manager Tim Dreyer. It'll include professional features such as color calibration, he added.

The screen is due to ship in nine or 10 months, Dreyer said. Its price in dollars should be in the mid-four figure range, a price that professional markets might well have an easier time stomaching than even hardcore gamers.

Samsung monitor grows a mutant sidekick

Mike Yamamoto  |  Jan 17, 2008

There's something about Korean manufacturers that apparently makes them want to experiment with monitors as if they were lab rats. A company called Woojin, for example, saw fit to grow a small screen out of the top of a full-size LCD last year. Now Samsung, which also has already shown a penchant for Frankenstein projects, has grafted a second screen onto the side of one of its displays.

Why? No idea. Coolest-Gadgets speculates that artists and others might want to reserve all 22 inches of the Samsung SyncMaster 2263DX's main screen while leaving lesser functions to the 7-inch sidekick protruding from its right side. Depending on your needs, it's either a bargain or a waste for US$550: Yes, you could easily buy two monitors for that price, but it's also a space saving double screen in one. Or, to be more accurate, maybe 1.3 screens.

Double the goodness with X-mini Capsule Speaker Gen2

Juniper Foo  |  Jan 16, 2008
There's never a good time to announce anything round about when Apple's high priest of innovation Steve Jobs starts to unveil the goods at Macworld. More so if it's a bitsy device by a brand that's a little under the radar.

Still, we've a soft spot for the X-mini Capsule Speaker, which blew us away with its mighty volume back in August last year. Now Singapore-based XM-I Company has unveiled the X-mini Capsule Speaker Gen2, which addresses a shortcoming of its older sibling. Namely that it's now stereo.

Part of the charm of the X-mini series lies with its patented technology which mimics the resonance of a sub-woofer; the capsule's resonance chamber acts like a loudspeaker...

Slew of new features en route to Apple TV

John P. Falcone  |  Jan 16, 2008

Update: Check out three related videos with more info on the forthcoming Apple TV upgrade: Steve Jobs comments during his keynote address; the video guided tour on Apple's Web site; and a summary from CNET's Donald Bell. This post has also been updated since its original publication with additional information.

The Apple TV just got a whole lot more useful.

Steve Jobs unveiled a major feature update to the Apple TV today during his Macworld keynote address in San Francisco that aims to transform the device from a TV-based iTunes media viewer to a more full-featured media-on-demand device. The hardware will remain the same, with the entry-level 40GB model costing S$497 (US$358.28), but a free software upgrade--available in two weeks--will add the following functionality:

Connect any drive to your USB

Darius Chang  |  Jan 15, 2008

Transferring data from an old hard drive to a new PC can be such a pain. Sure, you can opt to get a cheap USB enclosure. But having to install and remove multiple drives can be such a pain. The latest USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter, which will debut at Macworld 2008 by Newer Technology, may be the solution.

Using the common USB port, almost any flavor of harddisks and even optical drives can be hooked up to the PC easily. It is not too expensive, priced at US$29.95, and is compatible with Windows, Mac and even Linux systems. Though this is not a device for the gear bag (unless you happen to be a PC technician), this product is one of those inexpensive devices which you will kick yourself in the rear for not having when it's needed.
