Processors get a price cut

Darius Chang  |  Oct 25, 2006

Both major chip manufacturers--AMD and Intel--are slashing their processor prices, which may lead to cheaper desktops and notebooks during the holiday season.

The TL-60, a dual-core Turion chip for thin notebooks that runs at 2GHz, dropped 26 percent, from US$354 to US$263. The TL-56, which is a similar chip that runs at 1.8GHz, dropped from US$263 to US$220. The TL-52, which runs at 1.6GHz, fell from US$220 to US$184. On desktops, the Athlon 64 FX-62, a 2.8GHz monster chip for gamers, plummeted from US$827 to US$713. Click here for more of AMD's updated prices.

Intel cuts, on the other hand, were on the Celeron line. The Celeron D 360 for desktops plunged from US$84 to US$69 while the Celeron 326, the cheapest chip Intel makes, went down from US$39 to US$34.

ASUS PG191: Hardcore gaming LCD

Darius Chang  |  Oct 04, 2006

Combining its Power Bass System for superior audio quality and 2ms response time for lightning quick games, the new LCD monitor from ASUS has its integrated Webcam sights locked on fanatic gamers.

Though it comes bundled with 2.1-channel speakers, the ASUS Power Bass System and SRS TruSurround XT Technology allow you to add up to 6.1-channel sound so that you can use your eyes and your ears to target that irritating sniper. Not to mention there's that quick 2ms response time so you won't be shooting at "ghost" images because your screen can't catch up with the action.

Rarely seen on LCD displays is an integrated 1.3-megapixel Webcam, bringing a new dimension to your frag fest as you use hand signals to launch a sneak assault. Complete with hotkeys, this is one feature-rich monitor to go with your Razer Copperhead mouse and Logitech G15 gaming keyboard.

Other features include:

  • 19-inch TFT-LCD panel
  • Resolution: 1,280 x 1,024
  • 800:1 contrast ratio and 320nits brightness
  • Trace Free Technology (2ms gray-to-gray response time)
  • Built-in 10W satellite stereo speakers and 15W ASUS Power Bass System
  • SRS TruSurround XTTM Technology (6.1-channnel stereo surround sound)
  • Support video and audio communication (1.3-megapixel Webcam and earphone/mic jack)
  • Three USB 2.0 ports
  • Six convenient hotkeys
  • Touch-sensor key controls and power on/off melodies
  • Splendid Video Intelligence Technology
  • Flexible tilting and swivel angle adjustment
  • Supports both DVI-D and D-SUB inputs
  • Three-year system and panel warranty

  • It will be in stores in late November in time for the holiday season. But be prepared to fork out S$669 (US$482.72) for this beauty.
