Microsoft to finalize Windows 7 next week?

Ina Fried  |  Jul 07, 2009

Although Windows 7 won't go on sale until October, Microsoft is actually slated to be done with the code that ships on those first PCs within a couple of weeks.

Some enthusiast sites are predicting that Microsoft will peg the release-to-manufacturing date of Windows 7 to July 13, the start of the company's Worldwide Partner Conference. A report on GeekSmack.net suggests that Microsoft will finish the OS by the 13th and post the software to its MSDN and TechNet developer sites shortly thereafter.

  All about Windows 7

Although the timing would certainly be convenient, it's also the case that Microsoft is primarily focused on making sure it has stamped out any last-minute bugs.

Windows 7 "Family Pack" likely to be offered

Ina Fried  |  Jul 06, 2009
Microsoft appears likely to offer a "Family Pack" version of Windows 7, according to language in a leaked test version of the operating system.

This week enthusiasts started buzzing over wording in the license agreement in the test build that suggests Microsoft will have an option to buy a license for Windows 7 that covers up to three PCs in the same household.

According to blogger Kristan Kenney, the license agreement included with the recently leaked version states that "if you are a 'Qualified Family Pack User', you may install one copy of the software marked as 'Family Pack' on three computers in your household for use by people who reside there."

Microsoft would neither confirm nor deny that it plans to offer the family pack.

"We will continue to work with our partners and expect to have other great offers in the future as we lead up to and beyond general availability," a representative said. "We have nothing to announce at this time."

Asus G71 graphics issues

Joshua Goldman  |  Jul 03, 2009

While Dan and Scott got their first reviews posted without incident, I wasn't as lucky with the Asus G71.

Actually, that's not entirely true. You see the review was sailing right along until I started reading complaints about the system's Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M graphics adapter basically dropping frame rates to 1-2fps once the GPU temp hits roughly 81 degrees Celsius. So we did a little more testing and, sure enough, the frame rates dropped and we couldn't get them back up without a restart.

Archos 9PCtablet runs Windows 7

Dan Ackerman  |  Jul 03, 2009

The line between portable media devices and traditional Netbooks just got a little more blurred, thanks to the announcement of the Archos 9PCtablet. According to the company, this is a 9-inch touchscreen Atom-powered PC, in a form factor much closer to Archos' line of portable media players (or older UMPCs) than an Eee PC.

Using a touchscreen interface and an optical trackball, the Archos 9PCtablet looks at first glance like a Netbook that's had its screen and keyboard halves forcibly separated. Probably the closest thing we've seen recently is the import-only Viliv S5, which also had an Atom processor and a touch screen--but that display was only 4.8 inches.

Asus makes mecha-inspired gaming machine

Darius Chang  |  Jul 02, 2009

Nobody has ever accused gamers of being style icons, and the latest gaming portable from Asus shows it with its angular hard edges. The Taiwan maker claims the new G51 gaming portable is a midsized machine with the performance of a desktop replacement. The design of this laptop, with its metallic chassis and angular motifs, is inspired by robots from manga and other science-fiction literature.
