Acer Timeline 1810T makes Netbooks obselete?

Scott Stein  |  Jul 09, 2009

A true 720p HD Netbook: The 1810T.

The beauty of breaking out of the Windows XP mold is saying good-bye to Microsoft's set limitations on Netbook power. Setting the stage for the fall's next-gen battle of the future Netbooks, Acer's as-yet-unofficial (according to Acer) Timeline 1810T has all the trimmings that place it head and shoulders above the currently Atom N270 and N280-dominated crowd. Leaked photos have hit online, and it looks like a fusion between Acer's Aspire One line and its super-slim, recently reviewed Timeline 3810T.

1.8-inch HDD with mini-USB port

Darius Chang  |  Jul 09, 2009

Samsung has just announced its new Spinpoint N3U series 1.8-inch harddisks. Instead of PATA or SATA connectors, this drive comes with a built-in mini-USB port and seems destined as a portable storage device.

1.8-inch magnetic platter is the middle child in the portable storage family. Less expensive than solid-state drives, but lighter and more durable than 2.5-inch notebook HDDs, the 1.8-inch HDD was traditionally used in portable music players and premium ultraportables before flash storage became a viable option.

Sony launches new Vaio W Netbook

John Chan  |  Jul 07, 2009

Aside from pink, the Vaio W will be available also in white and a special edition brown shade.

Even though it exhibits all the characteristics of a Netbook, Sony has been careful not to label its Vaio P as one. The unique design of that minilaptop probably gave the company some justification to do that, but that probably won't fly with the just-announced Vaio W.

This new model has a shape similar to most other Netbooks from brands such as HP and Asus. The Vaio W comes with an Intel Atom N280 processor, a 10.1-inch 1,366 x 768-pixel screen, 1GB RAM and a 160GB hard drive. It has been announced for Japan and the US with starting prices of 59,800 yen (about US$627) and US$500 respectively. It does appear to be much cheaper in the US at this point in time. Regarding its availability in our region, Sony says it is still considering bringing the Vaio W to the Asian market and cannot confirm its availability at the moment. Here's a list of some of Vaio W's key specifications:

  • Windows XP Home
  • LED-backlit display
  • Web cam (Motion Eye)
  • Bluetooth, VGA output, 2 USB ports
  • Memory Stick Duo and SD/MMC slots
  • 3.5-hour rated battery life
  • 267.8 x 179.6 x 27.5-32.4mm

The long upgrade path for Windows 7 testers

Ina Fried  |  Jul 07, 2009
Going from Windows Vista to Windows 7 is relatively straightforward. So one might think that moving from a pre-release version of Windows 7 to the final version would also be simple.

Testers looking to move from a test version of Windows 7 to the final product may find the move not only costly, but time consuming. (Credit: Microsoft)

One would be wrong.

That's because the upgrade versions of the Windows operating system (the cheapest way to move to the final version) check for a previous paid version of Windows on the drive. That means, if a user did a clean installation of Windows 7 on their test system (as recommended by Microsoft), that same user will have to back up their data, reinstall their original operating system (XP or Vista), then install Windows 7, restore their data, and then reinstall their applications.

For testers who were running XP, that means doing a clean installation of Windows XP over their Windows 7 test build and then a clean installation of Windows 7 over that. Vista users have the option of reinstalling that operating system and then doing an in-place upgrade or a clean installation of Windows 7.
