If you're looking for a Netbook this holiday season, perhaps this is an indication that today's selection might be as good as it gets for a short while: Acer and Asus, two of the biggest powerhouses and instigators in the Netbook movement, are apparently waiting until 2010 before releasing any new Netbooks. This is according to a report from Digitimes, which claims that both companies are holding off for Intel's newest Atom processor, the N450. This dovetails with an announcement that Acer's Android Netbook is also on hold, perhaps for the same reason. Read more »
A new report out of Taiwan, where the PC maker is based, says the production of the previously announced dual-boot Netbook with Windows XP and Android is being delayed.
The report in Digitimes, says that while Acer had previously planned an earlier launch, "further evaluation has found demand for an Android Netbook is not strong enough, and it has therefore decided to postpone the launch of the model."
Digitimes says it was previously announced for an August release, but that it is being pushed back to November. When asked for confirmation, an Acer spokesperson said only that "Acer has not yet announced timing of a dual-boot Netbook."

Just a year ago, solid-state drives had sky-high prices with 64GB models going for well over S$1,200 (US$855.37). Today, you can score a unit with the same storage capacity for under S$400 (US$285.12).
However, unlike harddisks with their tried-and-true magnetic technology, different implementation technologies mean not all SSDs are made the same. In fact, you need to know more than the capacity when sourcing for a solid-state drive. Here are some things to look out for. Read more »
The storage-capacity gap between laptop and desktop hard drives just shrank significantly.
Western Digital announced two laptop drives that offer "extreme" amounts of storage: The Scorpio Blue 1TB and the Scorpio Blue 750GB. Prior to this announcement, the largest laptop hard drive available was 500GB.
Currently, the largest desktop hard drive on the market is 2TB. The Scorpio Blue 1TB drive, though half the capacity, is still very impressive, considering the fact that a 2.5-inch laptop drive is much smaller than a 3.5-inch desktop drive. The new WD laptop drives are the first that use 333GB per platter technology.
The Scorpio Blue hard drives support the SATA2 (3Gbps) standard but have a thickness of 12.5 millimeters, as opposed to 9.5 millimeters in other 2.5-inch drives. This means the new drives will not fit in all 2.5-inch slots in laptops. Read more »
Backing up a computer can be tricky for many people, especially those who access data via the software applications without knowing where the actual data files or folders reside on the hard drive. I have some friends who used to believe that you could back up all your office documents just by dragging and dropping the icons of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook over to an external hard drive.
This is where products such as the SimpleSave external hard drive series, like the SimpleSave Portable that Hewlett-Packard, comes into play. The other drive in the series, the SimpleSave desktop, will be available in September
