Apple launches new MacBooks, makes the Air more price competitive

Apple did it again. While most of the tech industry expected the Cupertino company to focus on the iPhone at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple instead started the show by introducing a new design for its 15-inch MacBook Pros, promoting the unibody 13.3-inch MacBook to the MacBook Pro family and implementing price cuts across its laptop lineup.

Freescale embraces SmartBooks

As if the line between Netbooks and notebooks are not blurred enough, at the Computex Taipei 2009 tradeshow, we caught a glimpse of another category of portables: Smartbooks. Essentially a Netbook running on a mobile phone chipset and operating system, a Smartbook gives up the ability to run x86 operating systems like Windows XP, but gets instant-on capability and all-day battery life with constant connectivity to wireless broadband networks.

Down Under gets first dibs on Windows 7

The first retail sales of Windows 7 will take place in New Zealand and Australia on 22 October, Microsoft confirmed this week.

Windows 7 will hit first New Zealand, then Australia, due to the countries' placement with respect to the International Date Line. Microsoft announced last week that its new operating system would hit retail shelves and start showing up on new PCs from October 22.

"Our understanding at this time is that the availability of Windows 7 will "follow the sun" on Thursday October 22," a Microsoft spokesperson said late this week. "As such, we're excited that the first retail sales globally of Windows 7 will take place in New Zealand and Australia as we cross the dateline ahead of other markets."

Checkpoint-friendly laptop bag with a twist

Planning on flying with your laptop on a summer vacation? You should definitely consider a TSA checkpoint-friendly bag. There is no shortage of options, but this new model from Aerovation makes one important change to the typical design so getting away from the checkpoint is even faster.

Most TSA-compliant bags split into two pieces: one side for a laptop, the other for your travel gear. These sides butterfly open letting the notebook sit flat on the security scanner's belt in order to meet guidelines. Once through the checkpoint you have to stop and seal up the two sides.

Mio joins the Netbook party

Mio is a company most well-known for its personal navigation devices and GPS-enabled smartphones. Now, it looks to expand that portfolio with computers, starting with an 8.9-inch Netbook and a 12.1-inch thin-and-light notebook.

The Litepad N890 looks pretty much like your generic Netbook with a lightweight chassis and containing the Intel Atom processor. What's interesting is that Mio has made 3.5G connectivity and GPS standard in this model, setting it apart from other Netbooks.
