Dell sneaks in new Studio 14z laptop

Dan Ackerman  |  May 29, 2009

Targeted largely at students, Dell's new Studio 14z laptop was quietly announced this morning in the US. Part of the upscale but affordable Studio line, which brings in design elements from Dell's high-end XPS laptops, the Studio 14z is thin and light for a 14-inch system, starting at 2.05kg and from 19mm to 30.5mm thick (the body is slightly tapered). Helping it shave away the extra millimeters is an LED display and the lack of an internal optical drive. Dell calls it "a homework-busting system by day and an entertainment powerhouse by night".

In a press release, Dell says the 14z is good for consumers who, "want a slim, easy-to-carry laptop and like the choice of a larger hard drive over an optical drive," making an obvious distinction between this model, with drives up to 500GB, and smaller Netbook, CULV, and super-slim 13-inch models that usually have relatively small hard drives.

Read the fine print on Apple's back-to-school promo

Darius Chang  |  May 28, 2009

Screen grab from Apple online store.

To help with the economic crunch, Apple is offering a special promotion for students or staff members in education institutions in Singapore. According to the Cupertino's Web site, you can get a free iPod touch when you purchase any MacBook from its Apple Online Store for Education site.

However, someone at Apple should have grabbed the dictionary app from the iTunes store before putting up this ad. Here is a definition of "free" as according to Webster's online dictionary:

Add more USB ports to your laptop with style

Dong Ngo  |  May 28, 2009

LaCie's Core4 and Core7, offer a combination of portability, functionality and style, and support four and seven USB devices, respectively. (Credit: LaCie)

With every new USB device I acquire, my desire for my Dell XPS M1330 laptop to have more than just two USB ports grows stronger. Perhaps now I can finally get my wish.

Tuesday, LaCie introduced two stylish USB 2.0 hubs, the Core4 and Core7, which seem like they will work well with laptops. Designed by Sam Hecht--an award-winning, UK-based, industrial designer--these two hubs offer functionality, portability, and style. Both come in a compact form factor, with cables tucked away when not in use.

Apple updates the low-end MacBook

Jim Dalrymple  |  May 28, 2009

Apple updated its low-end consumer notebook, adding a slightly faster processor and a larger hard drive.

The 13-inch white MacBook now comes with a 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, adding a little more speed over the previous 2GHz processor. The hard drive has also been increased from 120GB to 160GB in the upgrade.

Memory for the machine remains at 2GB DDR2, expandable to 4GB for an extra S$160 (US$115.10). Apple made no changes to the graphics card, choosing to stay with the Nvidia GeForce 9400m unit.

iCore-driven Clevo D900F notebook a beast

Julie Rivera  |  May 28, 2009

Normally, when you're reading off specs for laptops, an Intel Core i7 quad-core processor isn't listed--for gaming laptops, desktop replacements, or otherwise--and with good reason. We've had a few quad-core systems in the past, like the Toshiba Qosmio X305, but those Q9000 CPUs were made for these notebooks. So, what do you get when you cram a desktop processor into a notebook? A beast.

AVADirect will be the first reseller in the US to offer a notebook using the Intel Core i7 quad-core desktop processor. The Clevo D900F 17-inch gaming notebook can pack up to 12GB of DDR3, 1.5TB (in three 500GB HDDs) of storage with RAID support, Nvidia GTX 280M graphics with 1GB GDDR3, and a 12-cell battery.
