NEC releases new 10-inch Netbook in white

Darius Chang  |  Mar 04, 2009

One of the things we disliked about the Versa N1100 was the design. The plasticky square chassis harkened back to early days when one could hardly tell between a laptop and a concrete slab. The latest iteration, the Versa N1200, addresses the issue by "unexpectedly" coming out with a white paint job. If you hated the aesthetics of the N1100, the ivory shell of NEC's new Netbook is unlikely to do much for you.

But if you can overlook the design, there is much to love in the Versa N1200. For one, while retaining the same weight, dimensions and 150kg/f pressure resistance of the 8.9-inch N1100 , the new model comes with a larger 16:9 aspect ratio, 10.1-inch widescreen. Moreover, it includes a sleep-and-charge USB port which allows USB-powered devices to juice up even while the machine is turned off. A nice touch is that the trackpad has now entered the multitouch era as well.

Unfortunately, the Versa N1200 is still based on the old 1.6GHz Atom processor/Intel 945GME chipset instead of the newer 1.66GHz Atom chip/Intel G45 platform. In addition, when the NEC Versa N1200 hits Asia shelves on March 4, it will cost a hefty S$899 (US$640.82) while its competitor models are going for S$100 (US$71.28) to S$200 (US$142.56) less. Not a good sign considering the current economic climate.

Asus Lamborghini VX5: 1TB SSD and Blu-ray

Nate Lanxon  |  Mar 04, 2009

Taking time out from its release-a-billion-Eee-PC-variants mission, Asus has stuck a massive 1TB solid-state drive inside its brand-new Lamborghini VX5 laptop, which we first heard about at CES earlier this year.

Existing laptops that use traditional 2.5-inch hard disks max out at 500GB, so the news that Asus has doubled this with much more expensive flash memory sees us excitedly stroking Sceptical Cat.

Asus Eee PC Seashell 1008HA: Eee sells Seashells

Rich Trenholm  |  Mar 04, 2009

It's the Eee PC beach girl! Haven't seen her for a while. But today we have a reason for stretching out beside her on the sand, because Asus has shown off a new Eee PC laptop called the Seashell 1008HA.

Our man on the spot at the Asus press conference at CeBIT in Germany is ZDNet UK's David Meyer. He reveals the Seashell is a slimline Eee with a 92 per cent-size keyboard and multitouch keypad, weighing about 1kg.

Nvidia unveils low power GeForce G102M GPU

Joseph Kaminski  |  Mar 04, 2009

Yesterday, Nvidia unveiled the GeForce G102M, a new laptop GPU that will debut in a new 14-inch notebook from Asus called the K401N. The announcement was made at the CeBIT trade show in Germany.

According to Nvidia:

The GeForce G102M is designed to provide a superior graphics experience for thin, affordable notebooks. It uses 8 watts less power when running stressful applications than typical discrete notebook GPUs.

The new GPU has 16 processor cores which provide up to 4 times faster graphics performance than Centrino 2 systems. The GeForce G102M includes up to 512MB of dedicated graphics memory to accelerate 1080p HD video playback, photo and video editing, and casual games."

There are three models Asus introduced in the K series family: The 14-inch K40IN, which features a GeForce G102M GPU; the K51 15-inch, and the K71 17-inch which will feature the GeForce GT 120M GPU. The GeForce GT 120M performance GPU boasts 32 processor cores, and, according to Nvidia, will, "provide up to 15 times faster graphics performance than Centrino 2 systems and encode video up to 10 times faster than Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz processors".
