Via Technologies has released a new Netbook reference design aimed at PC manufacturers that want to start selling Netbooks for the first time.
The reference design for the Via Surfboard C855 mainboard includes the Taiwanese chip company's new VX855 media system processor alongside a C7-M processor. The mainboard will provide "smooth playback" of high-bit-rate 1080p high-definition video, as well as eight-channel HD audio, according to Via.
According to Richard Brown, Via's vice president of marketing, one advantage of the Surfboard C855 design is "the head start it affords mini-notebook system developers or those seeking to enter the market." Read more »
SmartQ recently sent out a press release in China announcing its upcoming Linux-based Mobile Internet Device (MID), the SmartQ 5. This MID will run on an ARM processor, usually found in mobile phones and handhelds. The Ubuntu operating system (OS) used on it, on the other hand, more commonly resides on computers using x86 processors made by companies like Intel and AMD. The combination of a power-saving mobile processor and a full desktop OS should be interesting.

There's even a special magnetic cover hiding a required licensing sticker.

Designing the labels off a laptop is an aesthetic triumph, and it's apparently not so easy. Read more »

Engadget found references to an Adamo 9 in some support documents on Dell's own Web site. There's also reference to a Studio One 22, a slightly larger version of the Studio One 19 released last week. That the new touch-screen all-in-one desktop might come in a larger size seems completely reasonable.
Dell hasn't responded to a request for an official comment on whether there is a forthcoming 9-inch Adamo, but it generally doesn't comment on unreleased products. However, Alex Gruzen, who heads up consumer product marketing for Dell, told me just last week that there are definitely more Adamo-branded devices on the way. He would not elaborate on what that might or might not include. Read more »
