Gateway expands laptop lineup in Asia

Darius Chang  |  Feb 23, 2009

After a long break from the Asian market, Gateway has only recently re-entered the region. Though it is a subsidary under Acer, the company maintains a seperate Web site as well as a distinct though limited range of laptops. Its initial offerings in Asia (Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam) covered the 8.9-, 13.3-, 16- and 17-inch screen sizes. Now, Gateway has added the 14-inch TC series to its lineup.

In line with the other models, the TC laptop is designed with the fashion crowd in mind. Available in glossy black (TC7808g) or red (TC7809g), the illuminated media panel and signature ID strip adds to its aesthetic appeal. Under the hood, the TC is an entertainment laptop at heart, with a 16:9 aspect ratio 14-inch display and Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS graphics engine. At just S$1,498 (US$1,064.22), it is also quite affordable. The flip side, however, is that for a thin-and-light the TC notebook is rather hefty at 2.4kg.

The Gateway TC7808g and TC7809g are already available in both the Singapore and Taiwan markets.

Survey: Apple's Mac customers highly satisfied

Tom Krazit  |  Feb 20, 2009

Mac customers report high satisfaction scores in ChangeWave's latest survey.

Apple may be in for some short-term pain when it comes to the Mac, but it can take comfort in the fact that recent buyers seem very satisfied with their purchases.

ChangeWave released another one of its surveys recently, which chart the likelihood of respondents to buy a personal computer over the next 90 days from one manufacturer as opposed to another. As we pointed out earlier this week, Apple appears to have finally run into the economic storm that is hurting the tech industry, although the more interesting number was the various customer satisfaction ratings assembled by ChangeWave.

Apple customers over the past 90 days reported by far the highest level of satisfaction in ChangeWave's survey, with 81 percent of Apple customers saying they were "highly satisfied." Asus customers were the second-most satisfied group, with 67 percent reporting they were highly satisfied with their purchase, while 61 percent of Acer customers fell into that category. Lenovo was last, with only 50 percent reporting such levels of satisfaction.

Dell battles over "Netbook" trademark

Erica Ogg  |  Feb 20, 2009

Here's how you know how enamored Dell is with the Netbook concept: It's volunteered to fight over the trademark on behalf of all other Netbook makers.

On Wednesday, the PC maker filed a petition with the US Patent and Trademark Office to cancel a registered trademark for the term "Netbook" by a company called Psion.

Psion is a Canadian mobile computer maker that owns the trademark and indeed has sold a product called Netbook in the past. Psion began sending some tech bloggers and Netbook makers cease-and-desist notices late last year asking them to stop using the term "Netbook." It's what you're supposed to do when you own a trademark: Defend it.

But Dell is taking the legal step of accusing the company of failing to defend it properly, not actually using the term for any current products--or for the last six years--and for lying about it. (See Dell's petition to the USPTO here.)

LG debuts its new Netbook in Barcelona

Julie Rivera  |  Feb 20, 2009

MWC 2009
This week, at the GSMA Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, LG Electronics announced the launch of its new Netbook--a successor to the LG-X110 Netbook released last year. Offering an integrated 3G HSPA connection and a 160GB hard drive, the LG-X120 sounds like a worthy contender in the Netbook market.

Included in the X120 is what LG refers to as a Smart-On interface, which basically allows the user to access the most frequently used programs just a few seconds after hitting the power button, without having to wait for the OS to completely load on the desktop.

First impressions of the Dell Mini 10 Netbook

Reuben Lee  |  Feb 19, 2009

The Dell Mini 10 will come in red, blue and black color options.

With manufacturers gradually replacing their 9-inch Netbooks with new 10-inch models as the sweet spot, it's only a matter of time that Dell has one out. Enter the Inspiron Mini 10 (no surprises here with the name). What makes Dell's latest mini notebook outing appealing is its combination of sleek, portable design and large comfortable keyboard. What's less appealing is the choice of glossy finish on the lid, which left plenty of fingerprint smudges after we handled it. But we can understand the choice since it does imbue the Netbook with a stylish touch.
