Love the sleek, elongated design of the Sony VAIO P but just can't stomach the price? If you don't mind trading Vista for Windows Mobile, then take a closer look at this Mio Mobile Internet Device (MID).
Spotting a sexy look with a 7-inch display, it is one of the few MID in a clamshell form factor with a full keyboard. Like the VAIO, this model foregoes the touchpad to save size. But, best of all, this model has a claimed battery life of over 8 hours. If you have a soft spot for the Windows Mobile platform, you'll need to be patient as this prototype will translate to a working retail only model in mid-2009.
Before you say not another Netbook (image not available), this one by peripherals maker Viewsonic should boast a good screen resolution, given the vendor's display pedigree. Expect it to retail for US$449 in early Q2 2009, with a 10.2-inch screen, 1.6GHz Atom processor, 160GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM. We were unable to confirm whether the Netbook would run on Windows XP or Vista, and when it would make its way to Asia.
At the Digital Experience event in Las Vegas' The Mirage hotel, Viewsonic also showcased its latest products including a 120Hz 3D-ready LCD monitor, 3D-ready projectors, digital photo frames and an All-in-One PC.
Finally, here's a vendor that could confirm the Asia availability of its products. The Alienware representative at the Digital Experience booth said its gaming PCs are expected to debut in almost all the markets that its parent company Dell is present in, including Asia. This is expected to take place later this year.
Alienware, a wholly owned subsidiary of Dell, is a gaming PC manufacturer which currently operates in selected European countries, Canada and the US.
The Digital Experience is a pre-CES show held at The Mirage, aimed at offering attendees a glimpse at what to expect during the annual Las Vegas-based CES which will open its door to trade and media from Janauary 8-11.
When 3DMark06 was released two years ago, it was a torturous test for any graphics card (GPU) to go through. Even high-end laptop GPUs had trouble hitting the 1,000 mark. However, the latest ASUS W90--showcased at CES 2009--totally thrashed this benchmark by hitting a score of 15,000 (according to tests done by the Taiwanese maker). Read more »
Much like Apple, Sony likes to keep its VAIO products aimed at mid-to-high-end buyers and generally eschews the budget end of the market (although there are actually a handful of sub-S$1,500 (US$1,086.25) VAIOs we've reviewed fairly favorably).
When it comes to Netbooks, it's no different; Sony's entry into the very hot minilaptop category shares a lot with Netbooks such as the Dell Mini 9 or ASUS Eee PC 901, but clearly goes out of its way to avoid being lumped in with them.
