The CherryPal Netbook Sundance deal

Darius Chang  |  Jan 19, 2009

Our eagle-eyed blogger spotted a nice deal to commemorate the upcoming Sundance Film Festival in Utah. For only US$399 (S$595.38), you can get both the CherryPal Bing laptop and Nettop from Amazon.com, shipping charges aside.

Hardware-wise, the CherryPal Bing is an uninspired 10.2-inch machine with an Atom 1.6GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB harddisk, three USB ports, Wi-Fi (no Bluetooth) and built-in Webcam. However, what caught our blogger's attention was the fact that this Netbook has a claimed battery life of up to 5 hours using the provided cell. It uses the Linux-based GreenMaraschino operating system created by the company, though you can opt for Windows XP if you are willing to pay for the license fee.

The CherryPal C114 Nettop which does not come with an operating system, has an anemic 400MHz Freescale processor with 256MB RAM and 8GB flash storage. The two USB ports, Wi-Fi and Ethernet are fine for productivity work, but don't expect to play any games on this low-cost machine.

If this special bundle rattles your cages then act fast because the offer is valid only till January 24.

The evolution of the Netbook

Erica Ogg  |  Jan 19, 2009
It's getting harder to tell the difference between a Netbook and a notebook.

Except when you look at the bottom line of the companies making them. Though initially thought of as a way to sell cheaper, less powerful companion devices to notebooks, Netbooks are beginning to lose their distinction, as evidenced by the new Netbooks unveiled at CES 2009. While it's good for consumers, the blurring of lines between the two could potentially be destroying the business models of PC manufacturers.

That lack of distinction between a Netbook and a notebook will become more clear as soon as Windows 7 arrives on the scene, likely in the next nine to 12 months. Microsoft's new operating system is designed to work on Netbooks and actually may provide a good experience for users on relatively low-powered devices, unlike Vista. That calls into question the value proposition of the Netbook category if the same OS is available on what are supposed to be two different kinds of machines, according to Stephen Baker, vice president of Industry Analysis for the NPD Group.

"What does that do to our business model? Have we (just) traded US$799 sales for US$399 sales?" he asked.

And the timing isn't great. "The unfortunate aspect is we're bringing these products out in a recession, which is likely to mean it's harder to (sell) these as an additional PC and not as replacement for something else you're going to buy," said Baker.

Flexicord cables take rattlesnake approach

Justin Yu  |  Jan 16, 2009
Kiss your blistered fingers and headaches goodbye--tangled cords are a problem of the past as long as you use Flexicords. If you're someone who sets up and breaks down your television, home theater kit, laptop, or desktop computer, Flexicords' coiled design eliminates the need to measure exactly how much cable you'll need to hook up your gear.

The cables come curly and extend out up to 10ft, ensuring that you have just enough slack without any excess clutter.

Flexicord offers cables for just about any application, including USB, phono jacks, S-video, networking cables, and HDMI. Once extended, the coils retain their shape thanks to a thick pipe cleaner that bends alongside the cable itself.

Finally, each wire comes with its own "recoiling tool", aka an inanimate plastic rod that helps you coil it back up. Prices vary depending on size and maximum length, but generally cost around US$20, with the exception of the 10ft HDMI cable that goes for US$34.

Dell launches Studio XPS 16 and Studio XPS 13

Darius Chang  |  Jan 15, 2009

Dell's Studio range focuses on multimedia, while its XPS line goes for power. The Texas-based company is merging the two to bring forth a new line of performance entertainment laptops--the Studio XPS 16 and Studio XPS 13.

The Studio XPS 16 is a premium 16-inch desktop replacement with a full-HD widescreen panel. Based on the new Centrino 2 platform, this machine combines a Core 2 Duo processor with a high-end ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670 graphics card. The Studio 13 is a lighter 13.3-inch affair and comes with Hybrid Graphics. This allows the machine to automatically switch between the integrated Intel GMA 4500HD (to save power) and discrete Nvidia GeForce 9400M video cards (for better performance).

Archos unveils Archos 10 PC: World asks why

Nate Lanxon   |  Jan 15, 2009

Archos, the French PMP maker responsible for making ace media players (and charging separately for key features such as codecs), is joining the ever-more-diluted orgy known as the Netbook market. It's bringing out the Archos 10--a 10.2-inch Intel Atom-powered Netbook, with an LED-backlit screen.

Inside it's got 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard disk, runs Windows XP, and offers Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB connectivity options. Look closer and you'll notice it's also sporting a look on its face that says, "Please, I know I'm both late to the party and essentially pointless, but go easy on me, yeah?"

No, we shall not. You are a pointless product, Monsieur Dix, bringing to the party out-of-date cake that no-one wants to eat, while everyone else is contributing trifles with exciting new toppings.
