Samsung has made laptops for pretty much every market except the US and Asia (except Korea), and generally, we've been pretty fine with that arrangement, but that doesn't mean we can't get behind a potentially cool new Netbook, as seen on whatlaptop.co.uk and pocketables.net.
The specs on this still-unnamed system are fairly standard Netbook fare: A 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 10-inch screen, 1GB of RAM, Windows XP, and a choice of 80GB/120GB/160GB hard drives (no SSD options as far as we can tell).
It's also got two things we specifically look for in a Netbook: A 6-cell battery (adds some bulk, but also over 5 hours of battery life), and integrated Bluetooth (important for tethering a smartphone for mobile broadband access on the cheap).
This new Netbook is expected sometime in October in Korea, the UK and other markets for around US$550.
At a Vivienne Tam fashion show in New York City, a special-edition HP Mini-Note was unveiled, complete with motifs created by the Asian designer. Though the bright red color and flowery chassis was eye-catching, what really got our attention was that instead of an 8.9-inch display, this model was decked out with a 10-inch screen.
Since the original Mini-Note had speakers flanking the display, the Palo Alto company should still be able to easily install a larger LCD without having to change the chassis dimensions or size. We do not know if this was merely a mock-up model or prototype of things to come, as we are still awaiting official word from HP.
The VAIO A series is Sony's flagship entertainment desktop replacement lineup. It was the first to offer an internal Blu-ray drive and the latest iteration, the VAIO VGN-AW, ups the ante by claiming to offer the best display on a portable.
The massive 18.4-inch widescreen has a 16:9 aspect ratio and LED backlights. Besides having full HD capability, what really differentiates this VAIO from the others is that there it uses the same 3LED technology in high-end Bravia LCD TVs. Sony claims that this allows the VAIO to display the super-wide color gamut for Adobe's RGB standard, giving it exceptional accuracy when reproducing images and videos. The unit also comes bundled with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Photoshop Elements, giving better value for professional photographers.
Specifications:
2.8GHz Core 2 Duo T9600 processor
18.4-inch full HD display (1,920 x 1,080-pixel resolution)
512MB Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT graphics card
128GB SSD with 500GB secondary HDD
Blu-ray writer drive
2.1-channel audio system
Pricing details are not available yet, but the system should start shipping in Asia come late October or early November.
Turns out, the sky isn't falling on the PC industry.
That's according to an update from IDC, an analyst firm that tracks the
global PC market. Despite economic sluggishness in the US, PC shipments have actually increased worldwide more than expected.
Worldwide PC shipments are expected to grow by 15.7 percent this year to
reach 311 million units, according to a report released Wednesday by IDC. Growth
will slow slightly, but remain above 9 percent through 2012. IDC says that
amounts to annual PC shipments reaching more than 482 million in 2012.
This growth is to come despite rising energy costs, slowing IT spending in the US and Western Europe, and the increasing saturation of the PC market in Japan, the US, and Europe. So what's behind
this recent positive outlook?
Those tiny, Atom-based Netbooks, according to IDC.

With new iPods out of the way, the next priority for Apple is the Mac.
A mid-October MacBook launch misses the back-to-school rush, but has Apple in the right place for the holidays.

John Gruber at Daring Fireball is reporting that Apple will roll out new MacBooks on October 14, which fits the usual Apple profile of launching new products on a Tuesday. We've expected that new Apple notebooks are coming for some time, with reports of a redesigned exterior for the MacBook to go along with Intel's latest mobile chips.
If that date comes to pass, Apple will have officially missed the back-to-school shopping season, which is generally one of the best-selling quarters for the Mac. Even if it launched the new notebooks tomorrow it would have missed most of the college students who were looking to upgrade before heading back to campus, but delays with the launch of Intel's Centrino 2 mobile chips probably didn't help.
