Raon Digital Everun Note gets recalled

Darius Chang  |  Sep 23, 2008

The Raon Digital Everun Note claims to be the first dual-core Netbook. Though at a price as high as the HP Mini-Note--coming in at over S$1,200 (US$863.74)-- coupled with its small 7-inch screen and cramped keyboard, this may be a hard sell even if the display is of the touchscreen variety.

But Roan Digital has bigger problems than convincing consumers to shell out over a grand for a Netbook. Pocketables reported that the Everun Note is being recalled for various issues ranging from high-pitched fan noise to blue screen of death and an overheated processor. A worrying thought considering that markets such as Singapore will be getting their first units only later this month.

However, TrendsMobile (the distributor for Roan Digital products in Singapore) gave assurances that the recall affects the first batches which were retailed only in Korea. Shipments for the international markets should not experience any of these issues. In any case, should there be any unusual hardware issue, the unit should be referred to the local service center for diagnosis.

Sony's turn to leak a laptop--the VAIO TT

Dan Ackerman  |  Sep 23, 2008
We've seen a bunch of new laptop models from Sony in the past couple of weeks, including the 15-inch VAIO NS, the 14-inch VAIO CS, and the whopping 18-inch VAIO AW.

Sony's apparently has one more new laptop model in the offing (that we know of), and this one is on the opposite end of the spectrum from the 18-inch Vaio AW. It's the ultraportable 11-inch Vaio TT, and according to the online rumor mill, Sony is going to officially announce it sometime Monday.

How do people find out about new systems like this before they're officially announced? Some of the information comes from eagle-eyed inspection of publicly available FCC documents, and, it always helps when someone finds and leaks a few new unreleased advertisements, like the ones below.

Rumor: HP shutting down Voodoo?

Erica Ogg  |  Sep 23, 2008
A rumor is circulating that Hewlett-Packard is closing the gaming PC outfit it bought just two years ago.

The report comes from a blog called Techgage, which cites an "insider close to the situation", who reports an email announcing layoffs is circulating at the company, though the report doesn't include a specific number of jobs being cut. It also reports that Voodoo is returning parts to its supplier.

HP spokeswoman Marlene Somsak said it would be "incorrect" to say HP is shutting down Voodoo, but didn't offer a denial that jobs will be or have been cut.

"We continually assess and rebalance the size of our work force relative to the business environment and market conditions," she said. Beyond that, she said HP had no comment.

"Shutting down" Voodoo seems more than a bit odd for several reasons. First, it's a brand that HP has had high hopes for. The company just recently announced its most ambitious Voodoo-branded products--the Envy 133 notebook and the Omen desktop--which are just beginning to ship.

Toshiba announces its first Netbook

Darius Chang  |  Sep 22, 2008

The circle is almost complete. Toshiba is the latest major vendor to join the Netbook fray, leaving Apple and Sony as the only big players which have not announced a low-cost laptop.

There is some information on the Toshiba NB100 from the official UK Web site. From what is known, there is little to differentiate this Netbook from its competitors, save for the USB sleep-and-charge port and Toshiba's proprietary ConfigFree software for wireless connectivity.

Specifications:
  • 8.9-inch screen
  • Up to 160GB HDD
  • Three sleep-and-charge USB port
  • Integrated Webcam
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • 4-in-1 memory card reader
  • Stereo speakers
  • Silver, champagne or black color
  • 1.05kg weight
  • Linux or Windows XP Home operating system

  • Pricing and availability details have not been confirmed at this time, but it is very likely that the Toshiba NB100 will be ready in time for the year-end holiday season.

Hey, little Buddy: Averatec announces Netbook

    Matthew Elliot  |  Sep 22, 2008
This week's Netbook entrant? The Averatec Buddy.

    (Credit: Akihabaranews.com Inc.)

Announced today, the 10.2-inch laptop costs US$449 and features the 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and Windows XP. It's not yet listed on the Averatec Web site, but upon first glance, it looks like the MSI Wind with a VAIO-like round hinge. While the press release is light on product details (size of battery? Screen resolution? Draft-N Wi-Fi? Solid-state drive options? Bluetooth? ExpressCard slot?), the Averatec Buddy on the surface serves up a larger hard drive than the MSI Wind for less.
