Qualcomm drops 3G-enabled Linux mini-notebook

Damian Koh  |  Jun 03, 2008
According to IDG News Service, Qualcomm yesterday showed off a mini-notebook made by Taiwan-based Inventec that costs around US$299 and is equipped with 3G connectivity.

Unlike the ASUS Eee PC which comes in both Linux and Windows XP flavors, Qualcomm's mini-notebook will initially run on Linux, though the company is also looking at using Windows Mobile 7 with its Snapdragon chipsets.

All these are still on the drawing board, but "similar products could be out by the end of this year", said Luis Pineda, senior vice president at Qualcomm. The company hopes to make a big bang with Snapdragon-based devices at next year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Sub-US$500 Acer Aspire One launched at Computex

CNET Taiwan staff  |  Jun 03, 2008
The Intel Atom processor is to be announced today at Computex, and much as it has tried to keep Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) manufacturers tightlipped before that, ASUS broke the silence first with its Eee PC 901/1000. Acer has since followed suit and unveiled its first budget UMPC, the rumored Acer Aspire One.

The 8.9-inch screen will have a resolution of 1,024 x 600 pixels. Memory comes in the form of either an 8GB solid-state or 80GB conventional harddisk configuration, with 512MB or 1GB of RAM. Of course, at the core of it will be the Intel Atom processor and the machine will operate on Linux or Windows XP platform.

The Linux version will hit the market first, with its price ranging from US$399-$499. Availability in other regions has yet to be confirmed.

ASUS Eee PC 901/1000 spotted at Computex

CNET Taiwan staff  |  Jun 03, 2008
Although the ASUS Eee PC 901 was unveiled at the WiMAX Expo yesterday, the star of the show for today had to be the Eee PC 1000. At the press conference, media from around the globe crowded at the entrance to get a glimpse at the two much-awaited units.

There are three configurations for the two laptop: The Eee PC 901 with an 8.9-inch screen, Eee PC 1000 (Linux OS) 10-inch screen and the Eee PC 1000H, which runs from a conventional hard drive instead of solid-state memory.

The Eee PC 901 is available in Taiwan now for US$559, while the Eee PC 1000/1000H will be on shelves only in end June and priced at US$625 and US$659, respectively. Availability in other regions has yet to be confirmed.

ASUS officially shares its WiMAX plans

Michelle Thatcher  |  Jun 03, 2008
ASUS has announced product showcase at this week's WiMAX Expo Taipei includes few surprises. After all, GCT Semiconductor already shared details of a WiMAX-equipped Eee PC 901. But for those of us who don't necessarily feel compelled to invest in a new laptop just to get wireless broadband connectivity, ASUS is also showing off the WUSB25E2V2 (catchy!), a mirror-finish WiMAX USB dongle.

The other products on display are plug-and-play base stations, also known as customer premises equipment. More details on these products, with such memorable model names as WMNV25E2+, are available in the news release.
