OWC did it again

Dong Ngo  |  Jun 28, 2008
As if being the first and only vendor that offers the largest pocket-size external hard drive, wasn't enough, OWC announced today the first 320GB external had drive that runs at 7,200rpm, the Mercury On-The-Go 320GB 7,200rpm. This is actually not the first high-speed compact external hard drive (and definitely not one with the most creative name, either), but it is the first that offers 320GB of storage space. The first 7,200rpm portable hard drive is the G-Tech G-Drive, the rest of compact external drives spin at only 5,400rpm.

Dell Studio steps in between XPS and Inspiron

Darius Chang  |  Jun 26, 2008

Dell's new Studio range is no longer a rumor and forms a new niche between the budget Inspirons and high-end XPS laptops.

The lineup includes the 17-inch Studio 1735 and 15-inch Studio 1535, both based on the same chassis design which borrows elements from the XPS M1530. It seems Dell has the idea that most entertainment laptops are used in the dark, as both models come standard with a backlit keyboard. A mini remote control and HDMI output have also been added to the mix, though we were a little disappointed that a sub-woofer, TV tuner and S/PDIF port were nowhere to be seen.

These units will be available in Asia by July, though pricing details are not given at this time. We have both units undergoing tests in our Lab, so stay tuned for our reviews on Dell's new Studio range.

Panasonic unveils Toughbook CF-U1

Matthew Elliot  |  Jun 26, 2008
Panasonic has added a tablet UMPC to its rugged Toughbook line. Sure, you could buy six ASUS Eee PCs and still have some walking around money left for the price of one US$2,499 Toughbook CF-U1, but we doubt you'll grab your lunch pail and Eee PC and head down to the mine. Panasonic's latest Toughbook is, of course, built for use in the field. It's "engineered for the walking worker", according to Panasonic, and comes loaded with features.

The 5.6-inch LED backlit LCD touchscreen is designed for viewing in direct sunlight, and below it is a backlit thumb keyboard divided by a number pad and arrow keys in its middle. On the right side, you can see a hand strap, but should you choose not to tether yourself to the Toughbook CF-U1, you can rest easy knowing it's been engineered to survive a 4ft drop and to resist rain, spills, dust, and vibration. It ships with two batteries, which, according to Panasonic, adds up to 9 hours of running time. The unit measures 7.2 inches wide by 5.9 inches deep by 2.2 inches high. It weighs a trim 2.3 pounds, which includes lugging around both batteries. It's completely fanless and uses a solid-state hard drive and an Intel Atom CPU, all of which should aid battery life.

Voodoo Envy in Ferrari red

John Chan  |  Jun 26, 2008

If you thought the Voodoo Envy 133 hot, wait till you see this customized one belonging to Rahul Sood, founder of VoodooPC. He got a painter to design the external carbon panels in red with Italian stripes. It even has his name engraved on it. This is one great example of the level of customization you may be able to get on your Envy once it ships. We don't know how much it will cost, or whether HP will even be bringing it into Asia at the moment. So just check out the pictures and lust hopefully for now.

Kohjinsha SC and SX series hit the Atom era

Darius Chang  |  Jun 25, 2008

Kohjinsha made a name for itself by offering one of the most affordable convertible tablet PCs in the market. Its latest offerings, the SC and SX series, now come equipped with the latest Atom processors.

The SC range is an upgrade from the older SH series, choosing portability over an integrated optical drive. The 7-inch screen has a 1,024 x 600-pixel resolution, with the main changes being its 1.33GHz Atom chip and the addition of an ExpressCard/34 slot. The Japan model comes with an integrated 1Seg tuner, which will likely be removed when it hits other Asia markets (since the 1Seg service is not available outside Japan).

The SX series is the largest Kohjinsha yet, sporting an 8.9-inch 1,280 x 768-pixel display with an integrated DVD writer and GPS. This series starts at ¥109,800 (US$), while the SC machines are cheaper at ¥89,800 (US$). There is no indication when these units will start appearing outside of Japan for now.
