During an event which showcased NEC's digital home entertainment strategy that saw the launch of two new desktop lines, the Japanese maker did not neglect business users and demonstrated its toughest laptop to date, the NEC Versa S9100.
Despite its sleek frame, the company claims the top cover is built to withstand up to 300kg per square foot of pressure, more than the Panasonic ToughBook CF-W7. However, apart from the addition of a harddisk sensor, the Versa S9100 does not sport a water-resistant keyboard. Nor was it drop-tested like the ToughBook. Fortunately, its data security features are much stronger with a fingerprint biometric sensor and TPM security chip combo.
What we did not like was its price. At S$4,099 (US$2,945.74), it is more expensive than the ToughBook and even the ThinkPad X61 which has a full-powered Core 2 Duo processor. Moreover, we were surprised to find that the NEC is retailing for a lot less outside the Singapore market. You can check out the details in our coverage of the NEC event here.
Lenovo has taken a page straight from Apple's playbook. The parody of the Macbook Air commercial promoting the ThinkPad X300 ultramobile PC has an effect similar to Apple's series of ads with John Hodgman and Justin Long that put down Windows.
It's not what you would expect from the Chinese company that acquired IBM's PC business, but it works. The ad is getting passed around like candy, and it is really funny and points out the weakness of the Macbook Air. (It lacks some ports and an optical drive.) Expect the Macbook Air crowd to strike back with a parody of its own.
