If you've been lusting after the ASUS Eee PC 900, you may not have to wait much longer. Lazyfai from Mobile01 forum might be the lucky number one to get his hands on the new 8.9-inch budget portable. To whet our appetites further, he has provided a nice series of unboxing images in his post.
No surprises on the design front, as the unit looks almost exactly like previously released images. Running on an Intel processor with 1GB of memory and 12GB storage capacity, the key improvements are the larger screen size and multitouch touchpad. No touchscreen in this version, though. Like its predecessor, the Eee PC 900 runs off Linux, but we can expect a Windows XP version to be available as well.
Word from ASUS is that we should be expecting an official launch across Asia some time at the end of the month. So it won't be long before we have a chance to unbox our own sets, too.
Recent concerns over "greenwashing" probably had nothing to do with it, but Fujitsu has apparently decided to skip the ever-popular bamboo in its version of the wooden laptop. Instead the Japanese company has gone with cedar, the lumber known around the world for saunas and mothballs.
Bearing the inspired name of WoodShell, Fujitsu's laptop was displayed at the Salone Internazionale Del Mobile furniture exhibition in Milan, according to Gizmodo. There are no details on specs, however, or whether it responds to Pledge. We'll take a wild guess that this is a novelty item more than anything else at this point, so we're sticking with our bet on Asus in the department of wood-grass materials.
It used to be so simple buying a ThinkPad. If you wanted an ultraportable with a screen less than 13.3 inches, go for the X series. If it's midsized machines with a 14.1- or 15.4-inch LCD you need, the T range is your man, while the R lineup is meant for the budget user.
However, if the latest rumor mill is true, then the X series will be crossing screen size lines into sibling territory (with a capital T). The 12.1-inch X200 is obviously an ultraportable, but the 14.1-inch X400 and 15.4-inch X500 will likely push the X series into the realm of thin-and-light. The new range is said to be HSDPA and EV-DO compatible, so it's likely the chipset is based on Qualcomm's Gobi technology.
At the same time, it is likely the T and R range will be refreshed with the latest Penryn processors. A new W series will represent workstation replacements, meant for executives who require high-end processing and graphics power for professional tools.
Bucking the trend of smaller and cheaper laptops, LG's latest couple to enter the mobile world are literally heavyweights. Launched in Korea, the LG R700 sports a 17-inch display, while the LG S900 holds a whopping 19-inch LCD.

Rumor has it that Dell is entering the UMPC race with its own 8.9-inch offering, hot on the heels of the HP Compaq 2133 and, hopefully, before the ASUS Eee PC 900 hits the streets.
Taiwan maker Compal, which manufactures laptops for big-name brands like Toshiba and HP, claims that Dell will start its first range of mini-notebooks with a US$499 price tag. The expected launch date is in June, by which time Intel Atom machines would have started shipping. Not many details at this time, but we'll keep you informed.
